Even though the newspaper articles contained remarks like "not a cousin" - we know that if they're Gallinger's - they're related! Five of the children died young and three lived long lives. Donald Christopher (in the children above) married Alice Gallinger and died within the year, fortunately they had one son William "Bill" H. Gallinger. Alice and her child Bill probably lived with Michael and Sarah Elizabeth Gallinger (above - grandparents) for a while as I have them in the house on eighth during the 1881 census. Alice was listed as a Mill Hand (probably the cotton mill) and William is 9 years, attending school. As you see below, Bill and Alice had 3 kids - Alice married a McCanse; and Lloyd followed his father into politics. I'm not sure how the McLaughlin got involved but there he is. The property is Lot 15, the South and North parts of Concession 1 in the County of Stormont. A valuable piece of property today, residential west end of Cornwall. SD&G Gen Soc received a copy of the Gould family history. As I browsed through it, the last page says: "National Archives Reel # C3158 contains a petition by 98 dishcharged non-commissioned officers, buglers and privates of the Glengarry Light Infantry. In a pay list also dated in the year 1815 Joseph Gould is registered as a Private in the company in which Michael Gallinger is the Sergeant." Now that is interesting! I don't think it is the original Michael as he was born ca 1721 but it must be a son or grandson. Worth looking into! I photocopied about 20 Wills for various Gallingers, mostly in the 1800s. They make great reading; I give, devise and bequeath the speckled cow to... or how about this one. I give devise and bequeath to my son Danial one dollar to be paid one year after my decease. Ouch! Somebody was mad! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 21 Feb 1996 19:49:09 -0400 To: griffish@idirect.com From: jworrall@cnwl.igs.net (John/Lily Worrall) Hi Shaun:- Got a Gould Family Book in the SD&G mailbox. The very last page reads as follows: "National Archives - Rell #C3158 contains a petition by 98 discharged non-commissioned officers, buglers and privates of the Glengarry Light Infantry, all of whom had served for the term of three years for which they had enlisted...There follows a listing of the 98 petitioners...a pay list also dated in the year 1815 Joseph Gould is registered as a Private in the company in which Michael Gallinger is the Sergeant." This is probably the son of the original Michael. Would like to have a look at that film one of these days. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 11 Nov 1995 11:20:34 -0800 From: samg1@ix.netcom.com (SAM GALLINGER ) Subject: Gallinger Family Tree To: griffish@idirect.com Hi Shaun, I am working on my family tree and have been doing so for many years. Evidently you are too. Maybe we can trade information. My Grandfather Samuel Rudolph GALLINGER was born in Gallingertown, Ontario in 1865. His family moved to Onandoga County NY around 1874. His father was Reuben Michael GALLINGER and his mother was Ellen Maria WEAGANT the daughter of Samuel Peter WEAGANT and Catharine C. COOK. Reuben Michael GALLINGER's father was Michael George GALLINGER and his mother was Margaret CRYDERMAN the daughter of John CRYDERMAN and Catharine HARTLE. Almost all GALLINGERS and GOLLINGERS in the U.S. and Canada are related. The first GALLINGER in the new world was MICHAEL GALLINGER who was a german speaker who immigated to New York Province from Europe in 1754. He and his family fled to what was then known as Upper Canada during the American Revolution. They were protestant farmers. My wife and I visited Gallingertown in 1991. There is no longer a store or church or post office there. It is just a country crossroads. Most of the people living there are still Gallingers. There is a small cemetery there and we found the head stones of my Grandfather's mother and father and brother stacked up behind some weeds in the corner. They had been broken off probably when the cemetery and been mowed. This area is not far from Upper Canada Village which is worth a visit. Some of my other ancestors headstones are located there in a memorial garden wall. Several of the old cemeteries were flooded forever when the St Lawrence Seaway was constructed so they rescued a number of the headstones and placed them in this attractive wall. There are many Gallingers in Ontario and across the United States. Not as many as the JONES or SMITHS of course but quite a few. I have corresponded with Mr. Anderson, who I think is related to me on the Cryderman side, on the Internet. He has not sent me his family tree yet so I don't know how we are related. I have a distant cousin in Gallingertown named JOAN GALLINGER. If I am unable to help you she may be. Our cousin JOAN GALLINGER of Gallingertown, Ontario has a lot of information. Her first cousin, GARY GALLINGER, lives in Toronto. Both of his parents are Gallingers. His mother, EDNA GALLINGER, works at Upper Canada Village. Unfortunetly when we were there it was her day off so we did not get to meet her. My parent met her and her husband a number of years ago. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 20 Feb 1996 13:39:21 -0500 CC: griffish@idirect.com Subject: Re: Gallingertown Steve Gallinger wrote: > > Hi Shaun, > > Wow! Do you think Mary Elizabeth would be the daughter of Jacob Gallinger 1819-1903 and Mary - 1821-1893? If so then Mary Elizabeth's siblings would have been Margaret, Dianna, Isaiah, Hezekiel and Lucinda (as shown in the 1871 census). Her grandparents on her father's side would have been Joseph Gallinger (1793- ) and Mary "Nelly" Alguire. Going back to Gr Grandparents we see Michael R.
