GENEALOGICAL SOURCES
IN THE ARCHIVES OF THE ROMAN
CATHOLIC ARCHDIOCESE OF TORONTO
(ARCAT)
From 1826 to 1841, the area now comprising the Archdiocese of
Toronto together with the dioceses of Hamilton, London and St.
Catharines, was simply the western part of the diocese of Upper
Canada, presided over by the first Bishop of Kingston, Bishop
Alexander Macdonell. The Archdiocese of Toronto was established in
1841 with administrative jurisdiction over the western half of Upper
Canada. The dioceses of Hamilton and London were created in 1856
and the diocese of St. Catharines was created in 1958 by a division of
the Archdiocese of Toronto and the Diocese of Hamilton.
Microfilm copies of all sacramental registers beginning 1830 up to 1910
of parishes currently within the boundaries of the Archdiocese of
Toronto are available through the Archives or through the Mormon
Family History Centres. The Archdiocese encompasses Metropolitan
Toronto; the Regional Municipalities of York and Peel; the County of
Simcoe; the Town of Orangeville; a portion of the Regional Municipality
of Durham (the City of Oshawa, and the Towns of Whitby, Pickering
and Ajax, the Townships of Uxbridge and Brock, the Ward of Reach
from the Township of Scugog); and a portion of the County of Dufferin
(the Townships of Mulmur and Mono).
Before beginning genealogical research the area or parish in which
one's ancestors lived must be established. Archives staff will not carry
out genealogical research but will offer advice and assistance when
required. Other genealogical sources available at ARCAT include:
