You are the visitor to this page, since April 4,1996 when I started the counter on this page.

What is Upper Canada you ask? OK, here is a short history answer!

In the beginning there was New France, made up of small settlements spread along the St Lawrence River. Most of these settlements were military, administrative, and commercial centers. In 1758-59 there was a war between France and Britain in New France, and in 1763 New France became a British Colony, still under French law. After the American Revolutionary War of 1775 to 1783, a large number of immigrants entered New France from the United States. Many had had their land confiscated, and they wanted to avoid further persecution. They were of British, German, and European descent, as well as Black slaves and Native people from the Six Iroquois Nations. Many had fought for the British (King George III) and came to be know as Loyalists. Those that could prove that they had fought for the British were given land grants and called United Empire Loyalists (the U.E.L. or U.E. could be used after their surnames). But the new settlers were not happy living under French law and the Roman Catholic Church of New France. So the British in 1791 passed the Constitutional Act which divided Canada along the Ottawa River; those living east of the river were in Lower Canada (Quebec) and those living West of the Ottawa River (what is now called Ontario) were in Upper Canada.
