THE SUMAS BRANCH
The following pictures are from the collection of Rick Newell (The Cabooster) taken in 1979 just before closing of the Milwaukee Road. The pictures reflect the very somber mood in these last days on this remote part of the system.
Update August 19th 2001.

The depot at Sumas looking South. The track behind the photographer connected to CP Rail. The Cdn-US border is only a few feet behind the photographer as well. |

Rick tells me that the "CMStP&P" sign here fetched $100. |

Milwaukee Road used small ore cars, about one train a day out of this limestone plant. These cars went to Columbia Cement in Bellingham which at one time thought of purchasing the line. The ore arrived via an aerial tramway at the tipple. |

Lynden. Looks more or less the same today but serviced by BNSF. |

Both of these bridges have been replaced my a new dandy highway bridge. I could not even find piers for the old bridge here, but the highway bridge is in the exact location of the railway bridge. |

The Bellingham Depot. It is now a pizza joint. Oh, shame! |

North end of Bellingham Yard, parallel to Cornwall Ave. Still used by BNSF as far as the underpass. To the right in the picture were the engine sheds. |

SW 1200 #630 approaching the turntable at Bellingham. This turntable is now used by the Lake Whatcomb Tourist Line.
