Lesbian
and Gay Liberation in Canada:
A Selected Annotated Chronology, 1964-1975
Donald W. McLeod
This authoritative reference guide covers the first twelve years of
the organized homophile/gay liberation movement in Canada, from 1964
to 1975. Each entry in the chronology is combined with a brief bibliography
of sources. Coverage is selective and focuses on self-declared lesbians
and gay men and their activities in regard to the forging of lesbian
and gay communities and liberation in Canada. Three appendices provide
supplementary information on lesbian and gay organizations, periodicals,
and bars and clubs.
Donald W. McLeod, a librarian and editor, is a long-time volunteer at
the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives.

"An invaluable resource for others working in the field.... McLeod's
work is of obvious importance." (University of Toronto Quarterly.
"Informative and well-organized.... The annotations...are models
of conciseness....[A] uniquely important reference tool" (American
Reference Books Annual).
"...McLeod has assembled an invaluable and informative collection
of names, places, and truths. At times, Chronology reads like
fragments from a coming-of-age novel for post-war queer Canada.... A
thorough, exhaustive, and oddly timely book..." (The Fiddlehead).
"[An] indispensable resource.... This book not only contains a
superb selected annotated chronology but also wonderful photos of some
of the movers and shakers involved, and three crucial appendices on
lesbian and gay organizations, periodicals, and a preliminary checklist
of lesbian and gay bars for these years. These are invaluable starting
places for research and should be required reading for all researchers
and students of lesbian/gay/queer history, sociology, and literature
during this period" (Gary Kinsman, Centre/Fold: Newsletter of
the Toronto Centre for Lesbian and Gay Studies).
