Gardens have always been tranquil spaces in our lives. It is a tapestry upon which God sows miracles...........a colorful paradise where the tender threads of a friendship are woven, a place to share in the wonder of nature and an alcove to replenish the soul. The Sunnycrest Garden came about with just these thoughts in view. It was early in the Spring of 98 that a dream materialized with dedicated volunteers who set about planting a garden for the residents and care givers of the Sunnycrest Nursing Home in Whitby. The preparation of the garden beds took considerable time, commitment, and hard work on the part of all who were involved. Gradually, the garden flourished and attracted the residents, their families and friends. As summer progressed the garden came into its glory embroidering color and fragrance upon our senses. Appreciation from the residents was the fuel that kept everyone motivated and garden visitors increased. Word spread about the garden and donations and flowers filled the empty spaces in time. The fascination for the garden, created an appreciable interest to organize and form a gardening group for the residents, staff and volunteers from the community. This met with plenty of enthusiasm: a place where people can learn how-to garden while contributing to the happiness and well being of others........and the Sunnycrest Garden Circle was formed. It was decided that the garden would not only serve to beautify the surroundings of the Nursing Home but also serve as a Teaching Garden. The garden acts as a nursery for a variety of plant material with scented pathways, a water feature and a garden bench upon which to relax. Plans over the past years have resulted in a variety of spring bulbs, Alpine troughs, English Delphiniums, a bigger vegetable patch, a new shed, composters and an archway that was used in Canada Blooms.

Meetings of the Garden Circle take place in the dining room and weather permitting in the patio garden. Workshops are scheduled to coincide with planting dates and garden parties. Garden related activities, tours & excursions to speciality gardens come with a membership in the Garden Circle. Excellent speakers are engaged for some of the meetings while workshops and demonstrations keep the energetic gardener captivated. The Sunnycrest Garden has a positive impact on everyone. The friendly atmosphere enhances the working environment of the staff and volunteers who share in the lives of those who live within this residential complex. There is nothing more warm and gratifying than to see the residents enjoy the garden and participate while they reminisce about their own gardens. "I used to grow that in my garden". Gardens have a tendency to keep ones spirit alive. Do visit us some day to enjoy our tranquil space ! Meetings are held at:
The Sunnycrest Nursing Home Membership in the garden circle is by invitation and everyone is expected to participate in some kind of activity. A family membership is $10.00 for the season on approval of an application.
