WANTED: YOU
New Megacity Needs Volunteers
By JORDAN H. GREEN The megacity is looking for some megavolunteers. Toronto residents are required for the 10 com- mittiees and boards which control everything from policing and parking to pension funds, the airport and the Canadian National Exhibition. "All seven municipalities have done this in the past," said Rosemary MacKenzie, the committee's assistant secretary. "It's the first time the amalgamated city has done this." Residents participating on these volunteer boards will help shape the decisions politicians make, by creating recommendations and reports which are taken to council for approval. As this is the first for the new megacity, no one is sure how many applications to expect. "We don't know since this is the first year, but we've printed 150 applications for every board just to be safe," MacKenzie said. Although there aren't any applicants at present -- applications are only available at the orientation sessions in March -- competition is expected in some areas. "There'll be a huge interest in the Police Services Board and the CNE," said MacKenzie. "Be- cause people know what they do and can identify with them." The city isn't picky in terms of qualifications, all one needs to be is a qualified municipal voter. That's a Canadian citizen, at least 18-years-old or older, who either lives in Toronto, is an owner or tenant in Toronto, or the spouse of someone who is an owner, tenant or resident of Toronto. Application forms are available at the end of the seminar for each committee or board. Seminars run in the evening at Metro Hall, 55 John Street, during the first week of March.
