Usurping the Senses

Day after I run around distracted and surrounded
You know the feeling constant reeling
Just want to sprawl out on the ground
And feel the wind flowing over my face
Smell the grass, the natural lace
See the birds, hear them sing
Taste the joy that nature brings
But mind usurps the senses
For past and future tenses
But living in the here and now
Hasn't lost its lure somehow
If I feel I'm going nowhere
I ask myself, "is there somewhere I should be?
Is there something I should be doing?
Is there any freedom? Isn't freedom free?
It is just as easy to stagnate,
Walking down the road, you know,
Depending on what you look at,
And what you see as you go
Take a trip on the other side
You may worry about it being an unending ride
But you'll never know
What it is that you are missing
And its not that far anyway
Maybe a mile or two, or an hour today
If you can just let go
Of all of your pretenses

Moving Right Along
Moving right along
After being stopped in my tracks
Try to pick up the pieces
And maybe cut myself some slack
The lines on the wall are starting to move
Think I'll get up and go down town
Find a new groove
'Cause I've been
Sitting around waiting too long
For something to happen
And I'm tired of that song
You know, someone once told me
If you don't like the weather, you gotta move,
But I'm past that now
You see, nothing much depends on the weather anyway
Rain or shine, I'm happy in my mind
I try not to get bogged down in triviality
I'd rather be traveling a bog heading downstream
Taking in the sights and sounds
Have a down to Earth conversation with the trees
What's left of them, if you know what I mean
All it takes really is a glance in the mirror
If you'd be so kind you may find
Out who you really are
All of the world is in our minds
Hate, love, war and peace,
But I can choose the latter

Back to Song Index

Ode To The Credit
Walk through the park
Soft rain comes down
A meadowlark
Lands on the ground
Spring run-off feed
Shallow river
Swift current run
Fast life giver
A river's ripple fades like time
And a moment's peace we shall find
Listening from this rocky shore
The larks song comes o'er
Small waterfall
Falls over where
A rainbow trout
Flies through the air
Nesting geese lay
By river's edge
Downstream water
Falls over ledge

Not Alone
I look around and I see
Crowds swirling in their
Individual spheres
Of light and darkness
Remembering, forgetting
Going their indivisive ways
Left and right, or right and left or down
I know in the end
It all comes down to you
But you're not alone
I know your eyes
May always be blue
But you're not alone
Sometimes I think I should be flying
And only stopping to hover
Above the outside edge of
Polluted atmosphere
But being bound by flesh
I have another view
Always looking out
And therefore up
Into a deep blue or eve
Cloudy sky

The Void
I knew you once before you were with a friend
We never had the chance to talk
She wasn't really true just a passing phase
Someone to fill the empty space
I need to do that sometimes
It makes the void a little less defined
I like to know your thoughts not possess your soul
That's just a reason to let go
You know we think alike, I always tell you that
It's the living thing, it's our love fact
It's not an emotional strain, it's not like I need to fear the pain
You walked into the room in to this empty place
Reading nothing in this face
And so I told you, I had to let you in
I always know where to begin
I'm just sitting here thinking it makes sense
To hold on to my independence
You know we're good at that, keeping love at bay
We always have so much to say
Today is another lonely day
No bags to pack no asking you to stay

Free World
When I was a child, my mommy would kiss me and tuck me in
I'd dream I could fly in the clear blue sky high above the earth
Those days are gone now, since I've become of age
Now I dream of having to rescue my mommy from evil ones
There's people out there and they have all These melds that they'd stuff me in
They've done it since birth and they use them to measure our worth
I say can't you see me and they answer like a sage
You'll just have to learn from your elders they have all the answers
I like to think that we're free and we live in a free world
Sometimes I wonder if we really know freedom at all
I'm not what you think I know I might sink
But that doesn't mean you can purchase my dreams
With your RRSP's and your ice cream and cheese
If the man on the street who has nothing to eat should raise his voice
Would you listen to his song when he tells you it's all wrong do you have a choice
A penny will do now if you could spare the time
But you just walk on by you can't fathom the world from his point of view
So if you've found yourself a role and your happy well stay there don't question it
Just make your donation to charity it's tax deductible
We'll label this group here you know they're all quite reductible
And we'll put them in group homes and shelters
And fax them a christmas card

Business As Usual
And when I get down
Or feel like I'm drowning
In all of the shit that you have created
I look up in the sky
And if a hawk's soaring by

I'll drift away on his wings
And thank the earth that he made it
And I'll see you tomorrow
And you can just walk on by
as usual
Cause though everything changes
It'll still be business
as usual
And when I come down
And I'm back on the ground
I'll try to be cool
I'll try not to fake it
But if you should find
I'm not feeling so kind
You don't need to know
You don't have to take it

Fly Me Away
Fly me off to Paris in that big jet plane
Fly me off to Paris and I'll be feeling no pain
I've got to get away, where my troubles can't find me
So fly me off to somewhere
And I'll leave it all behind me
Fly me to Jamaica, where it's sunny all the time
Where the girls all go naked and I won't be back again
I've got to get away and leave it all behind
So fly me off to some where
'Cause I'm really in a bind
They say you can't run from your troubles
Well I think they just don't run fast enough
They say you should'nt hide your feelings
Well, I think I can't hide mine deep enough.
I've had enough anyway
Fly me off to NASA, I'll join the space program
Fly me off to NASA, 'cause I need some space man
I've got to get away, far, far away
So fly me off to NASA
and I'll be light years from today
Fly me away
Fly me away
I'd like to fly away
Just get me some wings, I'll be gone
Into the blue, deep into the clear blue sky
Just call me Jonathon, and I'll be floating on the air
Yeah, drifting through the clouds, without a single care
Yes I'll be gone gone gone gone gone gone gone gone
'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane, don't know when
I'll be back again...

The Sound And The Fury
(Music by Steve Targett)
Don't touch your tongue to the fence in winter
And keep your hands in your pockets, or they'll get froze
You cannot slip outside, disturb the sense of order
One time, one place, one girl
I love my sister in the field
When caddy holds me, she smells like trees
Her hand went away (hush benji, don't cry)
I smell the sunshine as it ripples in the breeze
Could touch the sky it's in the leaves
They are like caddy, caddy smells like trees
You can come home now (she smells like trees)
You are my senses (she smells like trees)
My world's alone now please caddy come home
The fire once brought light into his eyes
The brief candle is out now I hear only his cries
The pastures sold, there's nowhere left to play
The others who play there they turn away
And call for caddy, caddy smells like trees

In Another Town
(Lyrics by Arlyn Beal)
Push my paper forward
As a shield from spider string
Step on snakes among the grass
To hear the crickets sing
Smoke my jealous fire
To match the summer flies
Lift my hopes all higher
Just by glancing at the skies
Writing now in darkness
Of familiar yet unknown
Begging for a prince's kiss
But no affection is shown
Up above the tiny trees
Moonlight shimmers down
See the beauty if you please
Oh-- in another town
Here uncharted homeland
From the holidays
Shake a friendly stranger's hand
It is just a phase
Hidden love soliloquy
While I'm far away
But when I see literate eyes
Mouth has none to say
As I think of you again
Soft hair and skin so brown
Pain bites like a bleeding sin
Oh -- in another town

When Diana Sleeps
(Lyrics by Arlyn Beal)
As I ride the moonless sky
I realize that I should die
So again for help I call
Because my end I want to stall
Underneath the starlight
Magic on a moonless night
Moth's wing and ant's bite
Two claps save my life tonight
Guardian Angel in my seat
Send me chills, give me heat
Protect me from death's embrace
Companion without a face
Underneath the owl's sight
Magic on a moonless night
Moth's wing and ant's bite
Two claps saved my life tonight
Then I felt the smooth egress
Like a butterfly's caress
So I sigh a silent moan
And wonder if I am alone
Underneath the stars, bright
Magic on a moonless night
Moth's wing and ant's bite
Two claps, save my life tonight

Arlyn
Lyrics by Arlyn Beal
Energetic carefree
Idealistic and open-minded
Sister of Ron
Lover of excitement, dreams, the moon
Who feels joy at the sight of nature
Happy while dozing, wonder while thinking
Who needs love, outdoors, food
Who gives heartaches happiness and counseling
Who fears pain loneliness and failure
Who would like to see Pluto and the stars
World peace and a waterfall
Who lives in an old church in the middle of
Nowhere, Ga.
Oh--Arlyn, where are you
Look what they've done to you
The circus song plays on and on
Now that you are gone

November 5th
And we grew up laughing
Didn't need to try
It's given to us
Without a reason why
And with initiation
And the years gone by
Our cherished innocence
Becomes a lie
'Cause you knew we loved you
And you knew we'd cry
When you took the pain and said
Give this a try
So I guess we're even
Though I'm still alive
You see you took it from me
So I don't need to die
Must we leave life
Without goodbyes?
Must we leave life
Without a reason why?
You swam the oceans
You flew through the skies
You made us laugh and
An intrigued our minds
So I stare at these rocks now
Tryin' to keep you alive
I know you'll hear me
It's just a matter of time
Yes I know you can hear me
It's just a matter of time...

You can also play Real Audio files (poorer quality sound)instantly by clicking on the Real Audio logo beside each song. You will need a Real Player to do this. If you do not have one you can get one by clicking the logo below.

1.Usurping the Senses (MP3: 3.9MB)   - Too much thinking can take you away from the heart and the senses.

2. Moving Right Along (MP3: 4.3 MB)   - After about 2 years of guilt stricken grief, I had to just stop, try to compartmentalize it, and move on. Otherwise, nothing would ever get done.

3. Ode To The Credit (MP3: 3.1 MB)   - A most amazing nature spot, given it's location in the west end of Canada's largest metropolis. During the spring and fall hundreds of species of migratory birds can be watched as they make their way north or south. I once paddled around a blind corner to find a very large goose atop his mate. And there actually is a small falls on the river where rainbow trout can be viewed airborn as they make there way upstream.

4. Not Alone (MP3: 4.9MB)    - I really think we can choose whether or not we will be alone in this world...most of the time.

5. The Void - Love song.

6. Free World - This is one from my rebelious student days. As I approach middle age the song still makes perfect sense to me.

7.Business As Usual (MP3: 2.8MB)    - Some people just don't give a shit.

8.Fly Me Away (MP3: 4.3MB)    About a year before Rick died he up went to Grenada. He wanted to live there permanently but of course his visa ran out and he had to come home. A girlfriend he had down there told us he seemed truly happy during that time. Too bad he couldn't have stayed: seems he did somehow manage to escape at least some of his troubles.

9. The Sound & the Fury (MP3: 4.9MB)    - Based on the novel by William Faulkner. Bengy the idiot manages in his innocent way to reveal all that is horrible in the world.

10. In Another Town - One of Arlyn's greatest poems in my view. I think we all have a part of us that resides in another town. Sometimes it's hard to keep that in the positive light of being "unique".

11.Arlyn (MP3: 3.5MB)    - Arlyn wrote this self portrait poem in grade 8 or 9. When I was visiting Arlyn's mother in Pavo, GA., I found a piece of paper with some chords that Arlyn had scribbled down. She had left it sitting on her piano. There was no music notation or lyrics, just a bunch of chord names. I played them out in the order they were written and it turned out to be this nice progression. I added the chorus. It still amazes me how these independent pieces of writing by Arlyn came together so naturally.

12.When Diana Sleeps MP3: 3.7MB)    - One of Arlyn's darker moments.

13.November 5th (MP3: 5.5MB)    - It could easily have been subtitled, "Act of Grieving".
