CONFORMITY, COMPLIANCE, AND OBEDIENCE

Is there a basis for this fear?

Do people do things to fit in?

Might people perform harmful acts when commanded by authority?

CONFORMITY- pressure to go along is implied -conforming to group expectation

COMPLIANCE- a direct request is made but agreeing is optional -complying with a request

OBEDIENCE- an order is given and submission is assumed -obeying an order

eg. 1.sports event everyone rises for national anthem ( conformity) -- do you wear formal attire to wedding (conformity)

2. child selling chocolate bar -do you comply? or justify refuse

3. Professor tells you essay must be double spaced before marking- do you obey?

CONFORMITY

- necessary to social interaction-being on time -following laws -conforming to styles- look at old photos

- mob behaviour- Jonestown 900 died ( obedience)

Public Compliance- when the group is there we follow vs when alone

Private Compliance -if the group influences us to convert then we have Private Compliance, more often the result of group influence

Non conformers tend to be leaders, stronger ego, less feelings of inferiority- less need to be affiliated and less of tendency to blame self Individual and minority with cause can influence- Gandhi, Martin Luther King JR

COMPLIANCE

-reciprocity- scratch backs- as sales strategy- "extras" -once committed we comply more-"foot-in-door technique" -"low-ball technique"- My manager wonÕt approve deal "Ben Franklin Technique" List pros and cons --pros always more "Warm Puppy Technique"-let them take it home

OBEDIENCE --Stanley Milgram - not so much the kind of of person but the situation that determines how person will act

-66% of subjects would continue shock to other subject even though dangerous-solely on prompt from experimenter
