PERCEPTION
PERCEPTION: the cognitive process of selecting, organizing and interpreting those stimuli provided to us by our senses -influenced by our motivational states, emotions, expectations, past experiences
CONSCIOUSNESS: the awareness of the environment and of one's own mental processes
Perceptual Selectivity/Paying Attention
What influences us to select one item to pay attention to vs another?
Two factors: Stimulus factors and personal factors
STIMULUS FACTORS:
CONTRAST: in perceptual selection contrast play a role ex
BOLDÊTYPE SHOUT
CONTEXT: if everyone shouting may not attend soft voice may prevail
SIZE: large billboard
MOTION: BIRD IN FLIGHT VS SITTING
REPETITION: REPEAT MORE WE PAY ATTENTION If too constant we may ignore
PERSONAL FACTORS:
Two students watch the same baseball game. One is fan of Blue Jays one is fan of Baltimore Orioles. Winning or losing is decided on one play. How will each see it? -decision is determined by the Motivation of perceiver
We often perceive what we expect to perceive
Creative problem solving often depends on being able to see things in a new way.
Past experiences also change what we perceive
PERCEPTUAL ORGANIZATION
-when we listen to speech we donÕt hear each sound the brain organizes to a whole
What you attend to is called figures rest is ground
Stimulus factors in organization
1. Proximity
2. SIMILARITY
3. CONTINUITY
4. CLOSURE
