He began to be seriously interested in acting while attending a local college, and in 1980 was accepted as an apprentice at the prestigious Actors' Theater of Louisville. A year later he went to New York, where he got some small roles in several plays.
Feeling that he needed to get his name more well-known to be taken seriously on Broadway, he moved to Hollywood, where he had a role in Revenge of the Nerds. Then, in 1984, he joined the cast of Trapper John, M.D. as Trapper's son, J.T. He stayed with the show until it ended in 1986.

Shortly after Trapper John was cancelled, Busfield landed another series role. His
portrayal of Elliot Weston on thirtysomething won him an Emmy Award in 1991,
and is the part for which he is best known. He has since starred in two other short-lived
series - Byrds of Paradise and Champs. In 1992 Tim and his brother Buck formed The B Street Theater. The theatre is small but well-respected, and Busfield works with them as both an actor and a director. He has also continued to work in movies, including Field of Dreams and Little Big League, and in his free time plays semi-pro baseball for the Sacramento Smokeys. |
Busfield is married to his second wife, Jenny, and they live with their three children in Sacramento, California.
