At 18 Harrison joined the army, but says that he realized after only a few days that he could not be a soldier. After twenty-five months of legal battles, he was given conscientious objector status and worked as a medic until he was honourably discharged.
Greg returned to Catalina after his discharge, unsure of what he wanted to do with his life. He was working as a doorman for a nightclub when he met Jason Robards, who told him that he could be an actor if he wanted to work hard. "Ten seconds later", Harrison told TV Guide in 1980, "I knew I'd be an actor."
The next day he moved to Los Angeles, where he did a variety of types of work to
survive, and got an occasional small part in a series or movie. Then, in 1977, he won
the role of Logan in the short-lived series version of Logan's Run. Although the
show would not last it did bring him some recognition, and in 1979 he was cast as
"Gonzo" Gates in Trapper John, M.D.
Harrison made a lot of money and gained a lot of fame from his role as the lovable surgeon, but a few years into Trapper John he wanted to leave the show to pursue a movie career. He did do several TV movies while still on the series, as well as directing some of the later episodes, but halfway through the seventh and final season he left the show.
Since his time on Trapper John, Harrison's career has gone fairly well. He never became a major movie star, but he has worked steadily, and shows no sign of stopping. He has had other short-term series roles, on Pee-Wee's Playhouse, Falcon Crest and, most recently, New York News, and has made a number of movies.
Greg's home life has also been a success. He married former CHiPs actress Randi Oakes in 1980, and they have four children. Randi no longer acts, but stays home with the children in the family's beautiful house in Oregon. Greg is home as often as his work permits, and brings his family with him when he has to be away for long periods. He seems quite happy with his life.
