 Chapter III

By Lynn-Philip Hodgson

The Agent's Training

Eric Curwain quietly went about his work as if it were an ordinary day.  Methodically he tapped, tapped, tapped on the keys of his suitcase radio.  As Eric continued his extremely important message, he could hear bombs blasting, now in the distance, but coming ever closer.

In actuality,  there was nothing the least bit ordinary about this day.  From his lair in the British Embassy in Poland, Eric Curwain was in the process of advising Britain that the German invasion of Poland was underway.  Only two days hence Britain would declare war on Germany.  Upon completion of the message Eric made his way out of Poland via Romania and Norway then linked up with ‘friends’ who whisked him off to England and subsequently to his ultimate destination in Canada.

Hollywood would have us believe that every secret agent was recruited on a foggy night by a dark and dangerous ‘Bogartesque’ character, in trench coat and Fedora,  standing in the shadow of a street lamp.  A burst of flame as he strikes a match to light a cigarette, his face visible to us for a split second, serves as a signal to his contact on the next corner under his street lamp, and soon another rugged but very handsome young man disappears into the mist, only to reappear scenes later with his own trench coat.  This scene may make for a dramatic and romantic moment in the movies.  In reality, however, Eric’s recruitment into the Secret Service was typical of that of many other young men at the time..........................
