Inside Camp - X

 Chapter VIII

The Lighter Side of Camp - X

Saturday night at Camp - X was the night for relaxation.  The camp personnel worked hard seven days a week, twelve hours a day, week in and week out.  Since Saturday night was party night, most personnel would end up at the mess where the bar was open.

It was on one such Saturday night that two American officers in training as OSS agents both had a little too much to drink and ended the evening by making outrageous and ridiculous bets with each other.  After repeatedly wagering as to who could drink the most shots, one agent leaned over and whispered in the other’s ear.  The recipient of the message yelled out, "You’re on!".  It was not known until the following day what exactly the final wager was.  The two men left the mess arm in arm, weaving toward the lecture hall.

The next morning, the two men awoke to splitting headaches.  As the self inflicted fog began to clear, one agent began to recall the events of the previous night and reminded the other of the bet made.  He was met with a groaned, "Oh, no!" in response.

The two men had a pass for that Sunday and they headed into Oshawa as previously arranged.  They went into the Genosha Hotel for breakfast.  When they were finished eating, one said to the other, "I’ll be back in a moment."  Off he went to the washroom and, when he returned, the other could not believe his eyes.  They left their table as usual, walked to the counter, paid their bill and went out onto the sidewalk alongside The King’s Highway # 2.

There was nothing terribly unusual about their stroll down the street, except for one small detail; one agent was dressed completely in full German Officer’s uniform which they had "liberated" from the lecture hall the previous night!  Uniforms of all of the Axis Countries were kept there for identification purposes as part of the agent’s training. They walked around town for most of the afternoon without a single person questioning them!  The uniformed agent had won his bet!
