Various Tones is a play on the word "variations" just as
you might say the
piece is a play on the theme and variations form. Typical
of the form is a
clearly defined and usually easily memorable melody followed by
a set of
elaborations in different styles or moods. While some of
the variations in
Various Tones are clearly delineated, it is somewhat ambiguous
where the
theme ends and the first variation begins. In fact, the opening
is more of a
preview of some of the material that will later form individual
variations.
Running the gamut from the lyrical to intensely rhythmic, from
motet style
to blues to pure bravura, Various Tones is a very challenging
work for
the clarinetist. This piece was a third prize winner at the
first Edmonton
Composers' Concert Society Young Canadian Composers' Competition.
