The Benefits of Having A Summer Job
by Howard Choi
March 1999
- A summer job? No way - that's stupid! What a waste of precious summer
time that could be used hanging out with friends or watching movies! But
take it easy and think about it a bit. Ever run out of money? Ever beg
your parents for cash because you ran out and just had to buy something
that day?
- Alright, so maybe you never ran out of money or have to beg your parents
for it, but wouldn't it be nice to have some extra money? That extra money
could help you buy that super-expensive Nike Air shoes that are
a bit more expensive that the other shoes. But the bottom line is that
summer jobs get you CA$H.
- You might be thinking it's a waste of time, but remember that you need
money to get by nowadays. Like I've said, you can get a lot more things
than you think with that little bit of extra money.
- When you grow up and graduate you'll definitely need a job. You can
write down your summer jobs on any application form, letting those who
review them know that you're independent, competent, and willing to give
up your time to do some work. That could also be the key to your acceptance
to any college/university and the next person not because s/he didn't want
to do any work during the summer.
- I bet that your main concern is that you're "wasting" time
doing extra "chores" that you didn't have to do… but it's worth
it. You may sacrifice some time every week, but you may get as much as
$10-15-even $20 an hour.
- Most of the time, you're probably sitting at home bored to death with
nothing to do - I know what's what I - and most of the people I know -
do during the summer. Why don't you spend some of that time doing something
productive - while getting paid for it!
- I don't know about you, but after weighing out the possibilities, I
think it is well worth it to do some work and get money. You might
lose of bit of time during the summer to do work but you could use that
money for stuff later on. I make about $200 a week.
- You can too.
