Master David Cummings dominated the 2nd Annual
Father's Day Open at the Best Western "Primrose"
Hotel in Toronto with a score of 4 consecutive wins
after a round 1 bye. Mr. Cummings finished
a point ahead with a 4.5 out 5 final to win the $500 Frst
Prize while Ontario Junior Chess Champion Yaaqov
Vaingorten captured clear second place with a 3.5-1.5
score to win $300. Second Prize. The 93-player
Dutton Chess event featured a $3,200 Prize Fund as
well as 3 Junior Scholarships for the world
renowned Chess Camp from the American
Chess School in Bradford Pennsylvania headed up by Dr.
Robert Ferguson, who played in this family event with
his 2 sons Ryan and Robert III.
Four players shared the "Top Under 2300" Prize Money of $600, all of them finishing with 3 out 5 finals and $150 cash. They included Polish Master Ted Kret of Mississauga, recently returning Ian Loadman from Toronto, Ontario High School co-champion Artem Gurevich from Northview Heighs Secondary and an amazing performance by Oakville junior Amanda Benggwawan!
The largest Under 2100 Section was won by Sergio Marcelo, Jr. of Covina California who went undefeated to score 4.5 out of 5 and win the $300. First Place Class Money in this 27-player Section. Gordon Gooding of Niagara Falls, Ontario and Tony Verma (another Californian now residing in Toronto) shared 2nd/3rd with 4 points apiece to win $150. each.
The Under 1900 Section was captured by Jake Mandoshkin of Etobicoke who scored 4.5 out of 5 to win $200, while Pepin Manalo of Scarborough was alone in 2nd place with 4 points to win $150. Scarborough junior Jason Dai and and Slava Sviridovitch (Alina's "Dad") shared third place cash of $50.
The Under
1700 Section was shared by Alfonso Alvarez and
"father" Igor Miller (Evgeni Miller's
dad) who both score 4 out of 5 to wint $175 each.
Three players shared a piece of third place including Perfecto
Alea, John London and OHSCC junior Mark
Badal of George Harvey Collegiate Institure.
The Under 1500 Section was dominated by Upper
Canada College students who took 4 of the 5 prizes in this
section. Alex Lambruschini scored a
perfect 5-0 result to win the $150. First Prize and an ASC Camp
Scholarship with Andrew Pastor in 2nd place in
the section with a 4-1 result to win $100., while Richmond Hill
junior Inara Aliev was alone in third place with
3.5 out of 5 to win $50. The top unrated battle was won by
UCC student Panos Christakis and he was awared
$100.
The 2nd Annual Father's Day tournament, an event started in 1999 by the Dutton family included at least 4 father/child combinations including the "Miller family" - Igor and son Evgeni; the "Sviridovitch family" including Slava and his daughter Alina; The "Fergusons" - Dr. Robert Ferguson and his sons Ryan and Robert III as well as Warren Dutton in the Under 2100 and his "dad" - the Tournament Director - Mark S. Dutton.
This event also saw a very special presentation of Greater Toronto Chess League Scholarship Awards by GTCL President Peter Boross-Harmer accompanied by OCA President Roger Langen, Dr. Ferguson of the American Chess School and Tournament Director and Organizer of the event - Mark S. Dutton. A sum of $75 per recipient was given to 12 students scattered across the Greater Toronto area. The criteria for selection included: being an active participant in chess tournaments; being active in the promotion of chess; demonstrating leadership in school functions; being a good, model student; demonstrating some degree of hardship.
