Final Standings at the 2002 Toronto Open
Stefanie Chu

Unbelievable. A stunning performance over the Easter weekend by Hao Yuan Wang led to his clear first-place victory with 5/6. Having a perfect score leading into his last two rounds, he secured his top position with a draw with IM Yan Teplitsky in round 5, and another with young IM Mark Bluvstein in the final round. Splitting second place were Teplitsky and Yaaqov Vaingorten, who thwarted IM Lawrence Day's attempts at a full-steam charge up the standings by breaking his streak of 3 consecutive wins.

Perfect scores are always worth mentioning, and in the Under 1700 Section, Kevin Teh walked away with first place with 6/6. Made it look easy, didn't he? Martin Veltmann's 5.5/6 victory in the Under 2100 can also be considered quite "perfect", as his half-point surrender came from a bye. In second place after leading for much of the tournament, was Steve Macleod. His round 5 loss to Veltmann was the turning point, but a successful performance nonetheless. There was also a clear winner in the Under 1900 section. Shiyam Thavandiran, Canada's Boys Under 10(!) representative at the last World Youth Championships took home the prize a full point ahead of his nearest challengers. Keep your eye out for this young meteorite in the future.

Congratulations to all, and congratulations to Mark Dutton and the Dutton Chess Club for running an impressive weekend show!

Holiday...what holiday?

This is big. The 2002 Toronto Easter Open begins tomorrow, with 5 IMs already confirmed. These are IMs Yan Teplitsky, Lawrence Day, Michael Schleifer, Thanh Nha Duong, and Mark Bluvshtein. The long weekend traditionally tends to draw out a crop of strong players. Two of these IMs hail from Montreal, and the other three are Torontonians. Of particular note is the re-emergence of IM Lawrence Day to the chess scene after a lengthy absence!

As you may have already seen, one of our own alexandrelesiege.com - partners will be playing in the event. Julie Trottier will no doubt have insightful commentary on her experience, games, and tournament impressions! I will also be going down to the Dutton Chess Club this weekend, to also report on some of the "goings-on."

With two "reporters" at the scene, we'll be working hard to keep you informed.

Until then...maybe it's time to start getting your predictions ready. We're in for an exciting weekend.
