RON LIVSHITS, I.M. WINS $500. FIRST PRIZE
AT THE OCTOBER FALL OPEN IN TORONTO

International Master Ron Livshits won the 1999 October "Fall" Open at the Primrose Hotel in Toronto with a 4.5 score out of 5 to win the $500 First Prize!  Gordon Morrell of Kitchener and junior Mark Bluvshtein from Israel both scored 4 points to win $250. each.  David Filipovich of Toronto and Keith Wight of St. Catharines both scored 3.5-1.5 results to win $150 each in the 26-Player OPEN section.  Six players tied for a split of $100. in the Under 2300 Section with 3-2 scores.  They included  Bill Evans, Robert Murray, Javier Segovia, and juniors Warrick Rolfe, Igor Divljan and Kevork Hacat.  

The Under 2100 Section was shared by Pierre Maheux of Ottawa and Vladimir Rubanovski who split $325. with 4-1 scores, while David Cohen, Brian Duong and Warren Dutton shared third in this section.

The Under 1900 Section was won easily by Ross Richardson with a 4.5 result to take home $200 while J.A.E. Allum, Robert Armstrong, Rahul Vaidyanath and John Tomlinson split another $200 four ways.

The Under 1700 Section was won by junior female Angel Xia who took a first round bye and then won all her games to finish with a 4.5 clear first, while Paul Buzdon of Guelph took home second place and Merlin Atayde won third spot.

The Under 1500 Section saw junior female Inara Aliev score 4-1 to win $150 first place while another junior Brian Courtney win the $100 second prize with 3.5-1.5.   Ilia Blushtein (Mark's father) won the top "unrated" prize in this section with a similar undefeated 4-1 score (3 wins and 2 byes!)

A total of 80 players participated in this "pre SPAIN" event and many are already planning their return for the 1999 Remembrance Day Open (a GTCL sanctioned event) that will take place from November 12 to 14 at the same location.  Players from Michigan and New York state dominated the early rounds but fell to the "locals" in the end.  Complete crosstables and new ratings will be available from the CFC website this Tuesday, October 19th at  http://chess.ca
