3-WAY TIE AT THE JANUARY WINTER OPEN
Jan. 14-16, 2000 in Toronto at the "Primrose"

International Master David Cummings pulled even into a 3-way tie for first place with a last round victory over leader Branimir Vujic, formerly of Newfoundland.  The two players finished in a 3-way tie with Ontario Junior Chess Champion Yaaqov Vaingorten, all of them finishing with 4 points apiece in the 5 round event at the Primrose Hotel.  The 3 Masters all received $300. each, while Andrew Peredun of Sault Ste. Marie captured $200 Under 2300 Class prize money with a 3.5-1.5 result. The Open Section featured 14 top "juniors", including "IM Killer" Kevork Hacat who knocked off Ron Livshits in the second round of this 73-Player event.
  The Under 2100 Section was won convincingly by junior Derek Pleau with a 4.5 out of 5 score.  Derek took home $250. as he "played up" one section and finished a full point up on 2nd place finishers Michael Winans of Rochester, N.Y. and the self titled "world's most dangerous chess player" Sam Haziprodromu, who drew their last round game and shared $250.
  The Under 1900 Section saw Newmarket junior Scott Hare share the top spot with Richard Wing to split $350 cash while juniors Angel Xia and Christopher Parker finished in a tie for third spot in this class to split $50.
  The Under 1700 Section was won by Slava Sviridovitch who scored the only perfect result in the tournament - 5 consecutive wins to capture the $150 first prize! Scarborough junior Lukas Beaudry scored 4 points to win $100 second place and third place was shared by 10-year old Jonathan Yu and Merlin Atayde who split $50. in 3rd place prize money.
