3. Article for September: Research

I'm working on an exiting project: my personal genealogy research, and I recommend it to you too. With a weakness for collecting still another ancestor or two, I have large files and a lot of notes. Probably the largest group is the ZENAR family, widespread locations, and mostly unrelated families. So I set up separate databases (using GenoPro) which are strictly for persons bearing the name along with spouses and children. This is a basis on which we are building on a continuous basis. Other collected information is: significant dates (birth, graduation, marriage, divorce, death, etc.), anecdotal information and photographs.

I'm transferring pertinent data from my notes and your letters into those databases, enlisting the assistance of computer technology to match and merge individuals with information from various sources. After this work has reasonably progressed I publish results to http://webhome.idirect.com/~minazenar/ and wait for your feed back to find out about any inaccuracies or suggestions for improvement.

As an amateur genealogist and professional researcher, I balance the amount of time and effort I spend in answering E-mail (and other) queries about surnames and my own research. I do make special effort to exchange information with others who are researching ZENAR and DROZDIAK surnames around the world. The site http://webhome.idirect.com/~minazenar/ and the E-zine OUR ROOTS are both published in English. It may become necessary to extend publishing effort to include other language versions of this information. I am, however, waiting until I receive requests from enough people to justify the work needed.

More on research in October Issue. If you have a question about genealogy or if there is a family history research subject you want to know more about E-mail mailto:dexter@zenar.com. I will do my best to bring you the answers.

3. Tips and Hints about Your Surname Research

When recording the results of family research it is better to say my son John then just my son, for example. Similarly it is better to say my father John died on dd/mm/yy (specific date) rather then my father passed away tree years ago.

When contacting distant relatives and when you ask them for the family information ask them to use the data entry sheet available at http://webhome.idirect.com/~minazenar/ . Data entry sheet (form) will guide the novice genealogist to record all the relevant information. Better yet, send it to them via E-mail or snail mail.

In accessing the http://webhome.idirect.com/~minazenar/ is difficult for you or the site is organized in a manner which contradicts your expectations please E-mail mailto:dexter@zenar.com and I will make effort to address your question, concern or suggestion for improvement.

To conduct your own research it may be more practical to download GenoPro file to your hard drive. That way you can apply updates to your family tree as you do the research. Go to http://webhome.idirect.com/~minazenar/ to find out how to download your GenoPro file. When you feel that you have made reasonable progress in your research E-mail the GenoPro file (as attachment) to mailto:dexter@zenar.com and I will add it to the site. This can be done every time your work progressed enough so the results may be useful to others researching the surname. Guideline: update the site at least after you have added a new person, his or her spouse and their children.

Visit http://webhome.idirect.com/~minazenar/ take a look at the name I assigned to your family tree, assess if it a reasonable title and if you have a better one let me know so I can change it.

If you have pictures of people that are or will be recorded in one of the GenoPro files send them to me so I can include in the web site. To find out how to send paper and electronic pictures visit http://webhome.idirect.com/~minazenar/.

We will return the original photographs snail-mailed to us for inclusion into the site, after the processing was completed.
