Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Old vs. New
Author: Carly Milne

Admittedly, I wasn`t that much of a Buffy connoisseur until toward the end of season three, when I started recapping the show for my site. But by the end I was rabid. I watched the beginning of season three. And couldn`t wait for season four. Then I watched most of season three again (thanks, Branwen.) And finally, I got to see the season everyone talked about: two (thanks again to Branwen). I now feel that I have the expertise to present to you my first TV VS on Buffy: present and past.

Buffy Season Two vs. Buffy Season Four

Has she had some work done, or what? In season two, Buffy looks damn good. I mean, she`s not a big girl. But back then she had curves and breasts, her face looked soft, and she actually looked healthy. In that scene in Becoming Pt. 2 when she`s on her way to kill Angel, you can clearly see hips as she`s stalking her way down the street, sword in hand. And now? She looks sallow. Her face looks sharp and she has little girl body, where her stomach is becoming convex and her once breasts are no longer. Her arms and legs have become bony. Does that sound like a kick ass vampire slayer? No. Fucking. Way. She still looked good in season three, so my guess is someone got to her during her hiatus from the show last summer and told her to lose more weight to get better parts than Simply Irresistible. Meh.

Winner: Buffy Season Two.

Xander Season Two vs. Xander Season Four

My most hated of supporting actors on any show, ever. I have a real hard time showing Xander any love whatsoever, so obviously it`s taking a lot of gag reflex for me to admit that season two Xander actually looks good. Were they paying the stylists more back then? I can`t figure it out. He actually looks stylish. His hair is good, his clothes are hip. Unfortunately, nothing can be done about his personality, but two out of twenty isn`t really bad when we`re talking about Xander. In season four, Xander is a loser. He looks like a reject from the Oasis Lookalike tryouts and dresses like a colorblind preschooler. I`m starting to wonder if Anya is blind. Not that she`s any prize chicken herself.

Winner: Xander Season Two (purely based on looks -- I`m so shallow.)

Willow Season Two vs. Willow Season Four

Ah, sweet Willow. Can I ever say anything bad about her? No. Season two Willow was naïve and fresh faced, dressed like a teenager and acted like one. In season three, she changed her style slightly, her hair got shorter, and she dressed a wee bit funkier, but her innocence remained (up until Oz gave her some booty during the finale). A summer hiatus later and the Willow we all knew was gone. Oh, sure, she`s still super smart and into the witchery, but summer lovin` turned her into a wild child! Crazy hair! Bigger attitude! More expressive clothing (though I wouldn`t agree with her wardrobe of the last four eps)! In season three when she`s confronted by her doppelganger doing some face licking, she says, "Ew!" Season four? Tara. I rest my case.

Winner: Willow Season Four.

Trachtenberg Psychs Up For Buffy
Author: Josef Adalian

Date: 7/11/00

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - After racking up credits in Harriet the Spy and Inspector Gadget, teen actress Michelle Trachtenberg has landed a killer role.

She will join the cast of the WB`s supernatural hit Buffy the Vampire Slayer this fall, playing a girl with psychic abilities who ends up kicking it regularly with Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar). The two will develop a sisterly relationship.

Most recently, Trachtenberg, 14, appeared with Matthew Broderick in Disney`s summer 1999 hit Inspector Gadget. In 1996, she played the title role in Harriet the Spy, opposite Rosie O`Donnell.

Her television credits include a gig as autistic child Lily Montgomery on the ABC soap All My Children and a regular role on the Nickelodeon series The Adventures of Pete and Peter. She has also made guest appearances on Dave`s World, Saturday Night Live, Law & Order, Clarissa Explains It All and Meego.

5 by 5 FanFic Update: Online now is The Slayer #1, White Hats #3, S-Men #3, & Angel #1

From BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER/ANGEL NEWSLETTER FOR JULY 4, 2000:
Entertainment Weekly has released their fourth installment of "The 'It' List." One hundred of the top "It" individuals in the industry are being saluted this week, including our very own Eliza Dushku. Why her? According to EW, "She made things even darker at Sunnydale by playing Buffy's doublecrossing Slayer, Faith. And with the upcoming comedy 'Bring it On' and the thriller 'Soul Survivors,' she's on her way to slaying Hollywood."

Obviously the folks at EW didn't catch Eliza in "True Lies" with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Curtis, but we like the effort none-the-less. One thing the write-up includes is a little known work ritual of Eliza's we didn't know about. Before a scene Eliza must smoke a cigarette. How much to you think her kissing scene partners appreciate that little ritual? And who does Eliza think is "it"? Russell Crowe.

From BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER/ ANGEL NEWSLETTER FOR MAY 30, 2000:
In an interview with
Fandom.com, Whedon speaks about Angel's sophomore season. According to Joss, "The thing about Angel is that even though we're very much worried about the characters, it's not about growth and change the way Buffy is. Angel is a person who's stuck in time. He can grow; he can learn, but basically he's not every man going through every boring thing. Whereas in Buffy, there are stages in life that we map out; it's a hero's journey going from youth to adulthood, but with Angel, because he's already there, we don't think of the years in the same way. We know what arcs we want to see, who's going to be kissing who, who's going to be fighting who, but it's not the same kind of, 'this is the place we need to take him to' like Buffy is."

From: Raven's Realm
Buffy Honcho Has Faith
Author: Michael Ausiello
Source: TV Guide
Date: 4/26/00

Faith the Vampire Slayer? That`s just one title producers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer might consider should series star Sarah Michelle Gellar hang up her stake to take a full-time stab at films. In fact, Buffy creator Joss Whedon admits that Eliza Dushku - who plays Buffy`s bad-ass rival, Faith - would be more than up to the task.

"I think absolutely you could have a show that revolves around Eliza. She is an extraordinary talent," Whedon tells TV Guide Online. "But [it] would be a very different show. There`s a reason why Sarah is Buffy and Buffy is Sarah. What Eliza brings to the show is very different than what Sarah brings. They have very different personas... a very different kind of magnetism.

"Could there be another Slayer?" Whedon continues. "Yeah. But you are talking about a radically different show, and right now I`m happy with this one."

"[Besides], I don`t really think that far ahead," he says. "I`m thinking about the next year and I know Sarah will be here. And I imagine that she will be here for some time after that."
