This is a bank of mostly useful patches, though hardly New Age for the most part. There are a couple that are real gems, but most are something less (though still useful, "one man's garbage...").
A lot of the pers here are programmed quite wide (using effects and pan to place elements to and fro, in contrast to other 'in your face' center place patches). Too many of the patches are plucky here, which means they probably devoted to much patch space to it (and when you only have 34 patches for 50 performances, you will have to reuse predominant patches again and again). If you're a pluck fan (sharp percussive attack), then these will twist your tail because they're done well. I also don't like the output level of this bank. The SSI folk acknowledged it when I asked about the New Age Vol II (which isn't nearly as low). You can adjust the main WS volume, but you'll run into this again when you combine these patches with those from other banks).
Other than the those gripes, I would say that the programming level was high and the variety of sounds were good. The bang for the buck value here is... okay.
I gotta say, this is one of the *least* musically useful, but one of my faves! I have to ammend my musical useful description for this one bank--if you looking for deep and moving pads, there's a lot to grab here. Then there's a lot of "non-traditional" areas that these might be useful in. Also (and perhaps more than anything), the programmer here really understands image placement--he did a great job of using pan and effect-buss placement in conjunction with vector modulation to make some very moving patches. At $19.95, this one would be worth it for just the heck of playing with the far out patches, as well as learing something from how he did it.
More specific description: Many of these are of the 'long evolving pad' category, with many things happening in the back and some of them require a few minutes to fully resolve. Also (and perhaps more valuable) are the fact that there's extensive use of short vector programming, making some very interesting attacks. There's many 'space' sounds and even a few demostrations of more traditional instruments starting with sharp transients and moving the body with that 'evolving' vector' control. Add to that wave-sequencing (he's no slouch with these either, and filled up the bank with them), and there's are some very interesting perfs.
Note: Most are *single patch perfs*!! (the only ones that are not are the splits that he did in the last dozen or so. Also, *every* patch is in RAM (well, I guess given that they're mostly one patch perfs) -- other patch banks use a mix of there own in RAM and the factory supplied ones in ROM (which pissed the heck out of Christain a few months back with some ProRec banks)
This one is probably the most useful to the gigging musician looking for established sounds patches. As the name implies, these are emulations of the SY77 (and DX) style patches used in many 70s and 80s music from pop to Chick Corea's music.
It starts off with some incredible stinkie acoustic painos (really bad, IMO, but I will note that a lot of work went into them, with different 'body' and 'pianos harmonics' patches.
The electric pianos (DX, suitcase rhodes and the like) are very nice, ranging from the sharp glassy variety to the mellow tremolo modulated fender rhodes pianos.
There's many other instruments, including standard but nice pads, synth string patches, comps and stacks, and even some distorted guitrs (like I said, useful for gigging). Not my fav, but for more than a few of patches which are real gems, it was worth it.
NOTE: This is the SAME bank that is out on the FTP site (WSNEW*.SYX), but I'm pretty sure that it was on the site before SSI ever got the rights to distribute it. Also, I believe that many of these patches made it into the WSSR ROM banks as well, but I'm not positive.
No review required, since most of us have heard it (I didn't take notes on it recently), but here's a blurb from the liner notes (yeah, I ended up buying the damned thing too):
"What our bank does deliver is some of the most unique, hard hitting Wavestation sounds around. These patches usethe unique wavesequencing and vector capabilities of theWavestation while providing that critical, often overlooked item so important to working musicians: sounds you can use."
This comprises of two cards, a PCM card and a program ROM, and comes in a CD-type case, with a sleeve containing a commented contents listing. It is probably the most useful of Korg's PCM cards for the original Wavestation series, being the one containing a decentselection of new synth waveforms.
Waves - There are 65 new waves on the PCM card, covering some very nice bass waves (much more meaty than the ones on the original WS), a decent selection of digital-synth-type waves, some more resonant waves and more miscellaneous ones. My faves are the basses and NewAnaPad. For a complete listing see the wave list above.
Performances - Again, a typically mixed bag of patches, ranging from the mundane to the really nice. Special mention goes to the first three performances, "Power Monsters" (powerful synth stabs), "Synsaw" (mean analog echoed brass), and "Vokal Motion" (really useful vocal pad, without being too breathy). 22 "VectorVox" is nice and ambient (makes a good whalesong substitute!), and the last performance, "Space Wars 1959" is basically the opening of Terminator 2! (the futuristic battle scene, not the motorway!)
A few too many clavs and organs and other 'basic' sounds for my liking, although it does contain a good handful of one-note jams. The sound-programming is of very high quality though - better than most of the third-party stuff IMHO. The patches are very clear and with a high-output level, and really show off the quality of the WS output.
Verdict: Well, these cards are pretty sought after, so if you see one, get it! Worth having if you can find it, although few people let go of them once they have them.
This is supposed to be very chart-orientated synth stuff, so you will find such recognisable names as "U Can't Touch !" and "Justify My Love". How close these come to the actual originals is debateable, but there is quite a high percentage of stuff in this bank I liked. What you won't find is good examples of the Wavestation's power - there isn't really any great examples of wave sequencing or vector stuff - most sounds are pretty straightforward digital synth stuff (but none the less useable for it).
My favourite of the bunch is 11 "Don'tFallInLove" - a nice echoey lead, along the lines of the hook sound in Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill". Nice.
Verdict: If you're doing way out synth stuff, you probably won't find much of interest here, but if your tastes lie along more straightforward 'pop' lines you'll find it useful - bells, pads, synth noises, basses and digital synth stuff.
This is quite a nice varied collection that is a little more "out-there" than the Top40 collection, and certainly more WS-ish. Big moving WS-ish pads, synth textures, analog stuff and a fair bit of 'plucky' stuff that I didn't find particularly useful.
Fave performance: "Big 5 Voice", a smooth analog pad with filter being opened up by aftertouch or the mod wheel. There's also quite a nice fretless bass that I would use, too. No real stand out patches though.
I liked the method of cataloging the sounds - the names include some information about the real-time performance controls - for instance, a 'w' means that the mod wheel does something, an 'a' for aftertouch and a 'V' for velocity.
Verdict: I personally didn't find this bank as useful, although it's good quality stuff throughout.
