Black Elk was a Lakota (Sioux) holy man of the Oglala band. He was born in the Moon Of Popping Trees (December) on the Little Powder River in the Winter When The Four Crows Were Killed (1863). He fought at the Little Big Horn and on Wounded Knee Creek. He was a cousin to Crazy Horse and had known Sitting Bull and Red Cloud. Although he spoke no English, he had observed much of the white man's world having travelled with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show to Italy, France and England where he danced for Queen Victoria. A man of great spiritual power and inspiration to his people and others around the world, he died in August of 1950.
