After seeing a polo bike based on an Italian Velocino (sp?),
I was inspired to build something similar. But after doing several sketches I ended up
building a ultra short wheelbase bike. The wheelbase was 30" with a 16" front
wheel and a 20" rear. The frame was composed of about 85% recycled tubing, the rear
triangle came from the frame that CR# 5 was based on. The cantilevered rack was inspired
by the original Moultons. The handlebar angle was adjustable, it had 5 speeds with
friction shifting. Despite the short wheel base the bike was quite stable. It was possible
of course to do really tight turns.
The front and rear brakes were alloy side pull, the rear rim
is alloy and the front was steel. The idler pulley was a climbing pulley with rubber on it
turning on a piece of 1/2" tubing. The bike was finished in a style smilar to that of
bikes from the early 70's. It was my impression of a bent version of a shopper bike.
