The second bike was built with 1 1/2" square aluminum tubing which solved the stiffness problem.

The frame was held together by pop rivets. The headset was held in place by building up aluminum plates with a hole drilled in them, and reamed to the correct diameter with a Campagnolo head tube reamer! The intermediate drive train was done to solve the problems of the long loose chain from CR#1. The front wheel had a Sturmey Archer drum brake built into a 20" wheel on the end of a 24" fork. I arrived at this design when I discovered I had made a mistake when I built the frame.

From the start, the gearing never worked right but it did the job. The BB shell was made from a piece of plumbing pipe tapped to Italian, because it just worked out that way. This was then bolted to the frame. The rear carrier was also rivetted to the frame. I never rode it with the tent on the back I just photographed it for fun that way. The one thing that was a problem with this bike was the poor acceleration. To look into this I built CR#3. Like CR#1, #2 had a seat made from camping foam duct taped to plexiglass.
