Let's Talk About Repetition ...Repetition is the reality and the seriousness of life. Soren Kierkegaard, Danish Philosopher, Writer (1813-1855) "Well my friend, if what I heard is true, you've said, at least once before, 'I don't like repetition!' In fact, you might have said it more than once." "Who me? If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times! The reality is that I absolutely abhor repetition. Who wants to do the same thing over and over and over again? Not me!" "Hmmm, now that we've got that out in the open, why don't we take an objective look at our lives to see if there is any repetition? Can you list a few likely events?" "Sorry man! Nothing comes to mind! Can you think of any?" "Well, I've been thinking about work." "What! Thinking about work! Why would you do such a thing? I always close the door when I leave the office and my work stays there until I return." "Seriously now, I think work is repetitious!" "What do you mean?" "Well, because of work, I get up early every morning, get dressed and go to work. I've done that almost every day for more than 30 years. That sounds like repetition to me. Come to think of it, every evening after work, I come home, have dinner, do some chores, read the newspaper and go to bed. In fact, I've been doing that since I was in school. That sounds like repetition too!" "I don't know about you but I don't like where this is heading. The more I listen to you, the more I feel that all of life is repetitious!" "Think about it! With the exception of a night here or a night there, I've been going to bed every night since I was born and getting up every morning - but thank God for that one!" "Yes, thank God for that and now, thanks to you, I can no longer afford to abhor repetition because it seems as if everything I do is repetitious!" [ Contents ] |
