Unlike many other f-body enthusiasts, I have not had a long history with the Firebird. Although, I have a passion for racing, I have never until this car actually owned a performance vehicle. My first car was a 1988 Pontiac 6000 LE. The car was great for our winters, but lacked any character. Let alone, the fact that I was in my twenties and still driving a four-door family car.
Back in 1997, my 6000 was finally put to rest (rust). It was during my search for a newer car, that I first came across the Firebird. My wife (Allyson) and I, took out a 1994 Green Pontiac Trans Am for a test drive. Needless to say, I was surprised by the power available. I almost lost it on a corner during the test drive. Unfortunately, the car was beyond my means at the time. We finally settled on a 1994 Mazda MX3 GS, which Allyson drove and I drove her 1995 Oldsmobile Achieva S.
During October 1998, I came across an ad for another Green 94 TA. This time, however, the moment and the price was right. On October 29, I traded in the Mazda and gave back the Achieva to Allyson (much to her disappointment).
Since purchasing my TA, I have truly enjoyed the benefits of having such a car. I have participated in all forms of racing as well as started the process of improving its performance.
Allyson has been so overwhelmed by my obsession that she did the only thing she could in such a situation. In October, 1999, almost one year to the date of the purchase of my TA, Allyson bought herself a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo.
Now let the family rivalry begin.... |
