"In Manitoba, Hecla Island is one of our favourite spots. They have recently paved all roads leading to the campground as well as in the campground, so dust is no longer a major factor. However, if you want to be sure of a spot in the campground, especially on long weekends, you would be well-advised to reserve. There is also a paved bike trail back to the village (about 8 km one-way) as well as other roads and trails for riding and/or hiking. ".... Bob MacKinnon
If you've ever been to the visitor programs in National or Provincial Parks, chances are that one of those wonderful NFB movies on canoeing with the late Bill Mason was shown. This link features a tribute to Bill Mason.
Don "Paddle to the Amazon" Starkell's material is also featured. Don and his son Dana paddled a twenty foot canoe from the Red river (near Winnipeg),down the Mississippi, around the Gulf of Mexico,up the Orinoco and down to the mouth of the Amazon river.
