VINYL RESTING PLACE

PERSONAL INTRODUCTION

A PERMANENT RECORD OF MY RECORDS

By: Jim Semple

It was collected over 3 decades and survived the first decade of the CD era. Now, in the year 2000, it's about to be history. My collection of 800 vinyl records must be sold. But before it goes, it needs to 'immortalized' through some sort of permanent remembrance in words and pictures. This web site gives me the opportunity to do that.

The purpose of this web site is twofold. 1. To enable me to sell the collection to the right buyer at the right price. 2. To create a cyberspace image of the record collection that has occupied a proud place in my home. True, I'll never be able to hear them again. But the web site will serve as way to preserve the 'spirit' of the collection... in its "Vinyl Resting Place."

Though I'm a writer not a web site designer, today's technology makes it easy enough for me to create what I envisioned.

"Vinyl Resting Place" was a massive project. It began in November 1999, with a complete listing of all 800 titles. It was done in Microsoft Access (database). Later a second list had to be created to include record company catalogue numbers and 'collectible' prices taken from a book. This was done in Excel (spreadsheet) so that I could do the calculations and get a sense of the 'collectible' value of the collection. If you purchase the collection and wish to have a copy of either or both lists (on a disk or as a file in an e-mail attachment), that can be easily arranged.

Creating the text for the web site was easy (and fun) part for me. Scanning the pictures and building it all into a web site was somewhat more challenging. I tried to limit the photography to a couple of packages of Polaroid film.

The 'vinyl' web site went online officially in January of 2000 and will be available for a reasonable length of time for potential buyers to view. Once the records are sold, I will make some changes to the words in the web site. At that point the collection will physically cease to exist, but the web site 'memorial' will live on.

If you are reading this as a potential buyer of the collection, I hope this helps you to estimate its value. If you wish to make an offer or want more information, contact me by e-mail at semple@idirect.com.

If you are reading this out of an interest in music and record collecting, I hope you can somehow share the personal importance the collection has for me and gain a sense the 3 decades of musical history here.

In either case, I thank you for respectfully visiting my "Vinyl Resting Place".
