PLAY THE RECORD (LISTS)
Click on LIST A or LIST B below. Please be patient.
They are big files. Allow a few minutes for loading.
Includes artist, album title, label, date and 'notes and hits'. The last column gives as many 'hits' as space would allow. In some cases 'notes' are personal comments or other interesting information about the album.
LIST B (For Serious Collectors)
Same essential info (artist, title, label, date) but instead of 'notes and hits', you'll find Record Company Catalogue Number and Book Price. Please note that 'Book Price' comes from "Goldmine Price Guide to Collectible Record Albums" by Neil Umphred. They are not to be considered actual prices. They are strictly a guideline. Note that these prices are in American funds. Potential Canadian buyers should factor in exchange rate.
Note that of the 800 records, 232 are not listed in the Goldmine Guide. In some cases the record was listed in the book, but the catalogue number (and sometimes the label) did not match due (probably) to Canadian distribution. A typical example of this is an early album by the Kinks called "Kinks Size". The American release is on the Reprise label. It's listed in the book at $20.00 (mono version). My album is on the Pye label with a totally different number. In situations like this, I did not list a Book Price. In numerous other instances, the number printed on my album was just slightly different from the number in the book. In those cases, I put in the Book Price.
Other reasons why some aren't listed include being too obscure or too recent (released simultaneously in CD version). However, the reason the vast majority of unlisted titles weren't in the book was because the book only lists American releases and many of mine were only released in Canada.
One thing that becomes obvious when considering the Book Prices* is that musical worth is not directly related to 'collectible' value. The deservedly unheralded Lothar and the Hand People is said to be worth $16.00 while Bruce Springsteen's acclaimed early albums are only worth $1.00.
'COLLECTIVE' CALCULATIONS
On the B list, using the functions of Excel, I made some calculations based on the Book Price*. This information was readable on the printout version but could not be properly transferred to the html (web site) version. So I am providing it here.
'COLLECTIVE' COLLECTIBLE PRICE (Total Book Prices* of listed records): $2,505.20
TOTAL NUMBER OF TITLES LISTED (in Book*): 568
AVERAGE COLLECTIBLE PRICE (of records listed in Book* above): $4.41
TOTAL NUMBER OF TITLES NOT LISTED (in Book*): 232
TOTAL COST OF UNLISTED TITLES (Number of unlisted ones X average price): $1,023.25
TOTAL 'THEORETICAL' PRICE (Listed Book Prices* plus average prices): $3,528.45
MORE REALISTIC 'AVERAGE PRICE': $1.00
MORE REALISTIC 'UNLISTED' TOTAL PRICE: $232.00
MORE REALISTIC TOTAL BOOK PRICE*: $2,737.20
All Book Prices* in American funds. Catalogue Numbers (Canadian) are the numbers printed on the records.
*BOOK PRICES BASED ON "GOLDMINE GUIDE TO COLLECTIBLE RECORD ALBUMS"
*BOOK PRICES ARE TO BE CONSIDERED STRICTLY A GUIDELINE
PLEASE READ WEB SITE INFORMATION CONCERNING THIS.
*BOOK PRICE SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED MY PRICE
** Sgt. Pepper available in both mono and stereo versions
Additional Information
Dates:
It would seem that prior to about 1973, record companies were not required to print the copyright date on the cover. In most cases I was able to add the dates thank to Mr. Umphred's book. In a few cases, I had no date information and inserted a question mark -- e.g. 196?.
Order:
The collection always was in alphabetical order by last name of artist or first name of group. However, there may be a few out of order. In cases like Jethro Tull, look under T. Within each artist, I tried to keep them in chronological order, but I'm sure in some cases they aren't.
Canadian Data:
All the records were purchased in Canada. In some cases, record company catalogue numbers and even the label names may be different from the American release. So far as I know, the Canadian release corresponds to the American release in both musical content and cover art. Some artists may only be known to Canadian music fans.
