"CANADA NOW UNDERSTANDS THAT THEY GOT TO DO BETTER,” SAYS CANADIAN ENVOY ADDRESSING SRI LANKAN PROTESTERS
By a Special Correspondent in Los Angeles
Anti-Canada demonstration led by a man masquerading as the Horror of Canadian Terrorism pass the Los Angeles public Libary
“Canada now understands that they got to do better” in combating terrorist financing in the country.
So said Colin Robertson, Canadian Consul General in Los Angeles addressing a one man delegation of Sri Lankan-American protesters in front of his office who were demonstrating against, what they called, Canada’s lax policies in dealing with international terrorism.
Sri Lanka has been complaining for many years that front organizations of Tamil Tigers in Canada have been bankrolling the violent terrorist activities of the island nation for decades, which caused more than 60,000 lives, especially under the country’s Liberal Party government.
The Canadian Consul General who climbed down from his 9th floor suite to the ground floor lobby at 550 South Hope Street in downtown Los Angeles ordered all press photographers and television camerapersons away from the lobby while the meeting took place. But despite the censorship, they photographed the meeting through glass windows.
The Consul General said that the United Nations Resolution 1373 which was unanimously adopted by the UN Security Council on September 28 2001 binds Canada to freeze without delay the assets of those who commit terrorism and cut off fund raising for those activities. “Canada now understands that they got to do better,” Colin Robertson added.
A document provided by the Consul General to Jayawardhana said measures that would be taken by the Canadian government would include a new listing provision that would establish a list of any persons or organizations of terrorism, powers to freeze assets of terrorist organizations, prohibition of terrorist fund raising, a new reporting requirement in which any person who deals in assets they believe are owned or controlled by a listed person to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and a new compliance regime for financial institution in which any financial institution must determine if they have any assets that belong to a listed person.
Walter Jayawardhana who read a letter addressed to the Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien and signed by many of the demonstrators outside the lobby said not only the Millennium Bomb which was intended to explode and destroy the Los Angeles International Airport in December 1999 but also 30 million Canadian dollars to finance the Tamil Tiger terrorist activities in Sri Lanka annually for the past so many years came out of Canada. He alleged Canadian money provided allowed the Tiger terrorists to purchase 60 tons of explosives including 10 tons of RDX in the 1990’s. He said Canada should satisfy its international obligations by immediately stopping fund raising activities of the LTTE and other terrorist groups and ban all terrorist groups listed by the US State Department.
Speaking outside the prepared letter, Jayawardhana also protested that the LTTE has infiltrated into the Canadian Liberal Party and one ruling Liberal Party Member of Parliament recently hoisted a Tamil Tiger terrorist flag with the Maple Leaf at a public function and Canada’s government has not distanced itself from their member’s act.
Nearly, 300 converged along the sidewalks in front of the Canadian Consulate and relentlessly chanted, “ Hell No- Fund Raising” and “Hands off- Sri Lanka”.
They came to the city of angels from and around the city, the residential suburbs, cities in Northern California and even distant places like Alaska.
The protest demonstration, the second in succession in two years in front of a Canadian government office protesting against Canada’s alleged harbouring of terrorist groups was led by Asoka Seneviratne of Galapitamada, a current resident of Alaska, masquerading as the “Canadian Horror of Terrorism”. He was dressed in a black horror cloak with patches of red Canadian Maple Leaves, wearing a bandolier and a machine gun hanging from both shoulders. “The Horror of Canadian Terrorism” was wearing a skull mask. He was holding a specially created placard, the handle of which was made of four models of skulls marked LTTE. A little Canadian flag was flying from one skull on the placard handle. The placard created by Sunil Ranjith de Alwis read: “Canada Loves Murder and Mayhem”.
Ten saffron robed Buddhist monks walked with the others in the demonstration. A man just in front carried a placard, which declared: “Canadian dollars are killing Buddhist monks”. A participant, Venerable Ambalantota Kolitha said, “We want to tell the whole Buddhist world that the racist Tamil Tigers are killing innocent monks. That’s why we are marching against the providers of funds for those heinous acts.” Venerable Pallebage Chandrasiri, Chief Incumbent of Maithri Vihara of Sun Valley, California said, “Canadian funds helped the racist Tamil terrorists to explode bombs and damage the most venerated Buddhist shrine in the world- the Temple of the Tooth, where the Buddha’s tooth relic is enshrined.” Venerable Yatiyan Vajirapala, Venerable Pallebage Chandrasiri, Venerable Makuluwewe Wimalajothi, Venerable Vitharandeniye Nanda, Venerable Ambalantota Kolitha, Venerable Koppakande Sumanajothi, Venerable Bulathsinghala Chandana, Venerable Akmeemana Piyaratana, Venerable Talangama Devananda and Venerable Parakandeniye Ariya Prabuddhi walked at the head of the march.
Bhikkus with US national flags in their hand marched at the front of the demonstration
Many of the placards carried by the demonstrators contained slogans that discussed the recent terrorist attacks on the United States: “Millennium Bomb Came from Canada”; “Hijackers Came from Canada”; “US today-Canada Tomorrow”.
The demonstrators did not forget Mr. Paul Martin and Ms. Maria Mina, the two ruling Liberal Party ministers who participated in a sixty- dollar -a plate- fund raising dinner organized by the Federation of Canadian Tamils (FACT), an organization identified both by US and Canadian intelligence Services as a front organization of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam: “Praises of Martin Sang-Tamil Tiger Terrorist Gang.” “Paul Martin’s Tiger Dinner –Isn’t going to be a vote winner”, “Martin’s Terrorist Host-Kills Civilians Most”, “Praises of Minna Sang-Toronto’s Dirty VVT Gang.”
Slogans critical of the Canadian Organization of FACT were also exhibited: “Funds of Canada’s FACT- Makes Terrorists act,”
Another placard said, “ Terrorist Fund Raising in Toronto-Got to be stopped pronto.”
Many other slogans were also in the same theme: “With Canada Money Extorted- Bombs were Bought and Exploded.” “With Canada’s Support Sprang-Terrorists of Ruthless Fang”, “Tamilian Gandhi Killers- have become Toronto Pillars,”
The placards also focused on LTTE Child soldiers: “Kids taken from door to door- are used cruelly in a Tamil War.”
