Chapter 17

The two of them immediately hopped into the car and sped off. Well Omeric did, the hurkle stood outside of the vehicle yelping happily at the men running towards them before Omeric pulled him into the car. He took a few sharp turns and sped onto the expressway. He glanced into the rearlook mirror to see if they had been followed. He didn't immediately see anyone behind them and was just beginning to relax when he heard a whirring overhead.

"Dmn! They've got a freakin' helicopter!" shouted Omeric.

He headed deeper into the city.

Traffic would soon be terrible as it neared no rush hour. The helicopter stilled whirred overhead and he had noticed three different cars following him. It was becoming desperate and desperate times called for desperate measures.

Omeric turned off the street into an underground parking garage followed by the three government cars. He quickly found a space and parked the car. One of the government cars found a space nearby and also parked while the other two were trapped by someone pulling out of a parking space. Omeric started running through the garage with the hurkle. He knew this particular garage had a tunnel to the subground vehicle station and if he could shake off this last guy and make it onto one of the trains he might have a chance of actually getting away with this whole crazy scheme.

Omeric went down some stairs and headed through a door to the subground vehicle station. He ran through the crowd and headed for the first subground vehicle that he could find that was leaving. Glancing back he saw a pair of red sunglasses following close behind. He raced for the subground vehicle and darted through the doors. He relaxed a little as he herd the conductor announced that the vehicle was about to depart. Then a man wearing a pair of red sunglasses and a dark suit pushed his way through the doors and onto the vehicle.

"Okay buddy. Give us the hurkle and nobody gets hurt," said the government agent.

"I'm afraid I can't do that mister. See I don't like leaving a case that has too many loose ends' they tend to come back and trip you up later. Besides you've got a train to catch," said Omeric and jumped off the subground vehicle just before the conductor called last boarding and pulled off, with the sunglass wearing government agent still aboard.

Omeric jumped onto the next vehicle and was off. Looking up he noticed the vehicle was heading out of the city and into the country, farming country to be more exact. The subground vehicle stopped at it's final destination with it's few passengers. Omeric stepped off the vehicle into the country station. It was small and deserted, which he took as a good sign. He took the hurkle over to a pay phone and dialed the number of an officer he never thought he'd see again.

Chapter 18

" 'ello? Who the bump is this?" said the creaky voice on the other end of the phone?

"Hi Ed. It's me Omeric from the old precinct."

"Omeric? Omeric who?"

"From the precinct where you worked for 35 years. Where you were a cop? Remember? Anyway I kinda need a favor," said Omeric.

"A favor is it? Want me to come back and rough up some bad guys for you eh? Well no doin'. I'm too old for that stuff now and to tell you the truth I don't think I give a bump either. Why don't you just put them in one of your fancy dancy holding cells until his namby pamby lawyer comes to get him out. That's the way it happens nowadays isn't it? Well isn't it!"

"Uh ... yeah sure Ed. Sure. Anyway, I'm out here in farming country and I've got a bit of a problem. I was wondering if I could perhaps stay at your place for a while."

"Why? You ain't gone crooked have ya? I ain't got no use for a crooked cop."

"I ain't gone crooked! Listen, I got this hurkle and these government guys want him. I want to know why. I just need to stay at your place for a little bit until I figure out what to do with him," said Omeric.

"Did you say hurkle? I'll be right there," said Ed and hung up.

A half hour later Ed showed up in an old beat up pick-up traveling craft. Ed was a short humanoid, with white scraggly hair that crowned his balding head. He went straight up to Omeric and poked him in the chest.

"Where's this hurkle?" he said.

The hurkle let out a yelp and bounded up to Ed.

"Well I'll be. You do have a hurkle. C'mon let's get back to my place before those government goons figure out where you are."

Omeric followed Ed into his pick-up and they headed off . They traveled deep into farming country, past rows upon rows of planted crops and small farms. After countless rows of crops and many minutes they stopped in front of a squat, plain farmhouse.

"You live here?" asked Omeric amazed that anybody could survive in such a place, much less choose to.

"Of course. Best piece of land not being farmed on for miles and miles," said Ed proudly. "Here let me show you round."

They started in the basement and worked their way up to the attic. Ed showed him every room in the house. Omeric smiled and nodded at each room. At the end of the tour Ed led them back to the basement and offered Omeric a cold beer.

"We should be safe enough now," said Ed.

"What are you talking about?" said Omeric.

"Bugs. Listening devices. They got ears everywhere man. But we're safe for now. Now let's take a look at that hurkle of yours."
