Problems in Space

Omeric grabs the hurkle's leash and quietly leads him out of the basement. They creep up the back stairs of the basement. Omeric is able to hear the voices clearly now. Ed is shouting at the government guys and distracting them from the basement. Good ole Ed. Now lets see if we can make good use of it.
They creep up the stairs and through a door into the kitchen. Omeric sees the backdoor and heads for it as quickly and quietly as possible. He opens the door and looks around to see if there is anyone around. Seeing no-one he goes out the door. He looks around to see where their best chance at escaping lies. He figures their best opportunity lies in making it to the trees just behind the back yard and losing them there. A quick dash across the back yard and into the woods and they'll be safe.
He bends down and motions for the hurkle to be quiet. The hurkle yelps happily at all the sneaking around. Omeric's head snaps up looking to see if anyone heard. "Shoot!", he says seeing two guys in dark suits and red sunglasses approaching, "Run!" He yells at the hurkle as he makes a mad dash for the trees.
"Hold it right there!" yells one of the men pulling out his gun.
Omeric turns around to see how far back they are when he sees the hurkle bounding towards the man with the gun. "Nooooooo!"
The hurkle runs across the yard, its tongue hanging out the side of its mouth yelping happily at the man. Overjoyed at seeing him he runs towards him. The government man pulls back. "Ahhh!" He turns his gun towards the hurkle and fires.
"NOOOOO! NOOOO! Don't shoot!"
The hurkle falls to the ground at the mans feet. Looking up with the biggest grin of its life on its face it dies.
"WHAT THE BUMP DID YOU DO THAT FOR?! YOU FREAKIN' KILLED IT! YOU STUPID NO GOOD LUMP OF .... "
"Sergeant Omeric please. There's no need for that sort of language and shouting."
Omeric whirled around to face the direction the voice had come from. "Are you in charge?"
"Yes. Yes I am," said the man. He was wearing a suit and sunglasses but his weren't as dark as the others or red framed. They were instead reflective and wire framed.
"Then maybe you can tell me WHY IN THE BUMP ONE OF YOUR NO-BRAINED OFFICERS SHOT THIS HURKLE?!"
