When she reached the door it jerked open.
"What the 'el do you think you're doin'," asked the man at the door.
Jupie taking one look at the man broke down in tears.
"What the bump is the matter with you?" asked the man. "Elsie come here and get this person off me! And you," said the man looking at Jupie, "stop crying all over my shirt."
Elsie, the man's wife, came out of the farmhouse and took Jupie into her arms.
"Poor thing," she said, "perhaps some tea would make her feel better."
Leading the still crying Jupie in the living room Elsie went to go make some tea. Omeric came back into the house and looked down at the pitiful lump sitting on his couch.
"You still haven't answered my questions," said Omeric.
Jupie continued to sit on the couch crying.
"What the 'el do you think you're doin' and what the bump is wrong with ya?" asked Omeric.
"Leave the girl alone," said Elsie as she came in to the living room carrying a tray with three porcelain cups and a tea pot, "She's obviously upset. Poor thing probably don't even realize where she is".
When Jupie heard that she stopped crying and looked up at the kind woman holding the tray.
"Where am I?" asked Jupie, afraid of what the answer would be.
"See there Omeric, I told you she don't know where she is," Elsie said, "Honey your in Hameron ...," Jupie let out an audible sigh, "farming country".
Jupie's round eyes became wide, her mouth hung open giving her a third chin and her mind went blank. When she awoke she lay in a soft bed with the poignant smell of herbal tea filling the room. Elsie came into the room to look in on their guest.
"I see you're awake," said Elsie kindly.
"I must have fainted," replied Jupie.
"Yep, ya sure did; right after I said farming..."
Jupie awoke in a soft bed with the poignant smell of herbal tea filling the room.
"I feel as if I've done this before," thought Jupie as she looked around the room.
It was a small room. There was the bed, a drawer with a small rectangular mirror over it, a nightstand next to the bed with a small porcelain cup and pot sitting on it and a ghastly colored rug on the floor. As Jupie sat staring at the rug wondering what kind of terrible disease caused such bad taste Elsie came into the room.
"Felling better?" she asked hopefully.
"Yes, much better," said Jupie.
"That's good; here drink some tea."
Jupie grimaced but took the cup obediently.
"Drink up dear it'll help ya regain your strength," said Elsie gently.
Jupie lifted the cup up to her lips hesitantly and looked over it at Elsie. Elsie gave a reassuring nod. Still reluctant, Jupie took a sip. The tea was strong and not very sweet. With some difficulty Jupie swallowed. Elsie smiled and made sure Jupie drank all of the tea.
"There, isn't that better".
Jupie nodded; she did feel better. Abruptly the door opened and in walked Omeric.
"Well you're finally up," stated Omeric.
"What time is it?" Jupie asked Elsie.
"It's time for you to tell us just who ya are," said Omeric.
"Hush Omeric!" Elsie scolded, "It's quarter after nine".
"Quarter after nine! My Gall! Earl will be furious!" shouted Jupie as she got out of the bed.
Omeric and Elsie watched her as she got up and ran out of the room.
"The next time somebody stops in front of our house, remind me to shoot 'em," said Omeric.
