Last Gentle Breath of Life

Chapter 1

It is a cool summer evening. The rare kind that brings to mind only pleasant thoughts. Lisa and I are sitting on the roof watching the sun slowly descend from sight; on its way to share its life giving light with other parts of the world.

On the roof you can look down into the streets and see the people walking by. Or you can look up into the sky and see clouds float by, the birds flying in formation, that perfect blue that automatically sets one's mind at ease.

Today had been a laid back day. No one called and we sat around all day relaxing. We usually like to do that before a big day. Tomorrow is going to be a big day. We received the assignment two weeks ago...

"I need your services," said the voice on the phone.

"Who?" I asked.

"The name's Whyte," replied the voice.

Information was coming in over the fax. Hmmm. A middle-aged Caucasian female. Married. Retired public school teacher. Recently moved to Boston and opened up a bookstore. Nothing unusual so far.

"Why?" I asked.

"Does it matter?" he replied.

"You know the way things work. You tell us why and we decide if we're interested."

"Yeah, Okay, strange set of morals I say. Basically its revenge, but there's more. She set me up."

"Go on."

"It was a couple of years back. I needed some information and she said she would supply it. There were certain "conditions" that she required. I didn't like 'em but... Anyway now it seems she needs money, lots of it, and she's threatened me with blackmail. So I called you."

"This was while she was a school teacher?"

"That was just a front... Anybody can become a teacher; especially in public schools."

"How?"

"Huh? .. Oh! Anyway you like; just keep my name as far away as possible. I've got enough problems without being suspected of murder."

"I'll call," I said and hung up.

"Who was that dear?" asked Lisa as she walked into the room.

"Oh, it was J.H.. He has a job for us," I said. Then I told her everything J.H. had told me.

"We'll need to check his story, of course," she said.

"Of course."

All the descriptive facts checked out with what J.H. had faxed. J.H.'s story seemed to check out too. Whyte did need money and she was trying to get it through blackmailing J.H.. But it also seemed like this assignment was based on revenge more than anything else. I don't like to do jobs based solely on revenge, it just isn't a good enough reason and it's bad for business.

"So what do you think? Should we take it or not?" I asked Lisa.

"I don't know," she replied, " looks to me like he just wants to get revenge."

"I was thinking that too."

"But there is something interesting about her; something intriguing."

"I agree."

"You know I hate when you do that."

"Do what?" I said with false innocence.

She laughed. A small laugh. It was that very laugh that told me that she was going to be the woman I married. And 25 years ago I did marry her.

"So are we going to do it or not?" she asked.

I smiled.

The next day I called J.H..

"Hello?"

"J.H. it's me," I said.

"So. Are you going to do it?" he asked, a sleight hint of desperation in his voice.

"We want to check her out first," I said.

"What!? Why?! I can't keep her off my back for much longer!"

"Pay her."

"What?!! I..."

"Only a little. Buy some time. I'm sure you can afford it. You can afford us."

"Fine," he said ready to hang up.

"We'll need $5,000 also."

"What? What for?"

"I said we wanted to check her out. Send the money J.H."

"....."

"I'll call," I said and hung up.

Chapter 2

{At Massachusetts University}

Gary Lewis sits in his class listening to his professor. The class is History, American History. The topic is World War I, a time when the United States blindly tried to hold on to a dying policy of isolationism. It took a second world war and the death of millions to finally jar the U.S. into the leadership role it was destined to take.

Gary's parents are going to be in the Massachusetts area and plan to stop by for a visit. Gary is kind of apprehensive about their visit. It is his junior year, the year most students have to decide what they are going to major in. A decision that will affect them for the rest of their lives. Fortunately Gary has already decided what his major is going to be. Unfortunately, his parents probably won't like his decision. Gary's major is art. He had taken some art classes in school and a few lessons with an artist who was a friend of the family, and even though they all said he was good he never considered a career as an artist a possibility. Never, that was, until he came to the U. of M..

When Gary first came to Massachusetts University he did not feel like he was fitting in. His classmates liked him and he didn't get into any trouble; it was just that he felt as if he was missing something, as if something was not quite right.

That all changed when Gary took his first art class. He had found that piece that was missing in his college life. That thing that made him special. Now if his parents could accept it then everything would be fine. Maybe.

{In Boston}

"Hello," says the voice.

"Hello J.H., it's me," I say.

"I see you arrived safely," remarks J.H. dryly.

"Did you pay her?" I ask.

"Yea. And it cost me ten grand."

"You'll get over it. I called to tell you we arrived in Boston today and you'll have your answer by the end of the week."

"Fine. I hope I haven't wasted my money," replied J.H..

"You hired us didn't you?" I say before hanging up.

"Ready to go 'sightseeing'?" asks Lisa as she steps out of the bathroom into the hotel room.

She is dressed in plain, inconspicuous, casual clothing. Yet she still is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. Her beauty has gotten me into a great deal of trouble in the past, but it has also saved my life more times than I care to count.

"All set," I say.
