The music pumped through the speakers surrounding the dance floor, the rhythm heavy and infectious. All around bodies moved to the beat most in pairs, some in groups amd here and there a single dancer moved alone. Clarence stood against the wall not dancing watching those who did. Checking out the crowd.
What am I doing here?
One song became another the same heavy dance beat driving them both. The difference nearly indiscernible as one song blended into another to his ear. He moved over to the bar and ordered another Blue Lagoon yelling to be heard over the music. They girl behind the bar smiled as she gave him his drink and took his money. He smiled back and opened his mouth but she had already turned to serve someone else. Clarence shrugged and went back to his place on the wall.
Christine came down the stairs dancing her way to the bar.
"Hey Monica," she said smiling at the bartender, "give me two Mikes' Hard and a Bud."
The bartender handed her the drinks.
"Put it on my tab. Thanks."
Clarence saw the girl move over to the bar. He followed her with his eyes. She was wearing a pair of black slacks and a gray tank top that even from a distance he could see was cut provocatively low or perhaps she just filled it out that way. She got her three drinks and proceeded to dance her way upstairs. He watched her go and liked what he saw. He moved off the wall and followed her away from the dance floor. She went past the second floor to the third. He followed behind wondering where she was going.
Does she know I'm following her?
He climbed the last flight of stairs and saw her behind the counter where you checked your coat. Smiling he walked up to her.
"Ticket."
"Ummmmm ...."
"Do you have your coat ticket or not?"
Clarence fumbled in his pockets and pulled it out. She took the ticket and disappeared in back, returning with his coat.
"Here," she said laying it on the counter.
Clarence looked at his coat then at her.
"Ummmm ... Thanks," picking up his coat he put it on and walked away.
"Bastard," said Christine, "Didn't even leave a tip."
Saturday morning, a time for relaxing, a time to put the pressures of the week behind and enjoy the weekend. A time to wake up late, watch cartoons with a big bowl of cereal. And of course it's a time to chat. But to some any time is a time to chat.
Clarence turned on his computer and sat down, a large bowl of cereal in his lap; cartoons on the television in the background.
