The congregation of St. Athanasius' Anglican Church in Orillia is a proactive member of our community, sponsoring a number of outreach initiatives and donating time and resources to a number of worthy causes.
The Breakfast for Learning program is one such project. Parishioners, along with volunteers from the local community unite to provide nutritious morning meals to students at a neighbouring elementary school using our kitchen and church hall. The "Mount Slaven Breakfast Club" is an ongoing success story, and is a helping fill a real need in our community. We are always looking for new recruits to help. If you are interested in helping, get in touch with us!
The "Coffee Talk " parents and tots group that meets in our church hall on Tuesday mornings is another program designed to meet a need in our community. Initiated through the inspiration of new parents from within the St. A's and Holy Cross Lutheran congregations, and carried on by enthusiastic volunteers from the group, it has become a welcome gathering place for new parents and caregivers and their young charges from the community at large. Childcare is provided and guest speakers are frequently invited in to speak on parenting related topics. Deaconess Pam Harrington from the Holy Cross Lutheran Mission provides ongoing support for the group. Newcomers are always welcome.
"Pay what you can" Fellowship Breakfasts are held to celebrate special days during the calendar year and offer a wonderful way to get together with new and old friends and start off these Saturdays with a full tummy! Little Christmas, Valentines', and St. Patrick's Day are some of the theme breakfasts that we enjoy. Euchre nights, car rallies and horse drawn wagon rides are other fun events that parishioners delight in. Our fundraising suppers are community favourites!
St. Athanasius sponsors the 6th Orillia Sparks, Brownies and Guides, as well as the 7th Orillia Beavers and Cubs. We also provide space for an Al-Anon group as well as the Pine Grove Women's Institute to meet.
Birthday Sundays The last Sunday of every month is a marked with potluck lunch and a birthday cake to celebrate birthdays that have occurred that month.
Special Services Special services occur through both the Christmas and Easter seasons and include joint services with our sister church, St. David's and the Holy Cross Lutheran congregations.
Youth Retreats Youth retreats are offered for youth aged 13-18 and are run every year under the direction of our Youth Co-ordinator.
Summertime Wednesday Café The senior youth group operates this café as a means of outreach to the community during the summer months. It is a donation only snack bar whose proceeds are directed to charitable causes.
