As we approach our 25th anniversary next year, 2004 – let me share our story.  Of necessity, the time had come for the very small beginnings of The Silver Thimble to move out of the basement of our home.  It had begun to grow rapidly so a decision had to be made.  This was the fall of 1978.  I felt that if I could find a little old house that was already commercially zoned and had parking, I would buy it, otherwise forget the whole thing!  It happened – in due course- and on April 26th, 1979 I was the owner of a little old, black and white house with limited space but on a double lot so there was parking – lots of it.

My son, Stephen, who was a student in Architecture, saw great possibilities and decided the limited space above the first floor, could certainly be expanded to great advantage.  You know how well that turned out and with other major renovations, we were open for business on October 1st 1979.

When I look back on the photos of that time – we were a great deal younger and the stock was so very limited but we had NERVE – lots of it!!!!  Our knowledge was sound and we made it grow with seminars we attended all over the place and reading and experimenting.  The “we” consisted of one of the finest friends any one could have in Caro Owen.   Truly the best.  Marg Kennedy was also with us until illness overtook her and she was unable to continue.

Jane Cartwright- who has been with us from the beginning – a very talented friend who now does our great window displays.  Janet Taylor – a customer and long time friend who joined the ranks and took the phone call when my first grandchild was born in Vancouver.

Jeanne Montague – with us for 16 years who is a fabulous Appleton yarn overseer as well as controlling the smocking pleater.  She never says “No”.

Jean Durandt has been with us over 12 years both as a student and a friend.  From South Africa a while back- so everyone loves her accent as well as her voice – funnily enough, does the ordering and oversees all the Australian books and magazines.

Anne Spikula – I can’t count the years we have been good friends but she comes to work always with a joke (from church if you please) – a smile and sleeves rolled up to prepare for the blocking that she is so good at.  Pat Overell – for years and years has so capably made up your stitched treasures, shopped for your fabrics and trims and picked up and delivered every Wednesday without fail.  It is Christmas once a week!

Lou Conant and Jan Peters began as our Saturday girls – but their expertise has created a niche in our minds and hearts and they fill in at holiday times, which they do with a smile.  There you go – there is the story that we will celebrate with you all next year.

It will be a time when we will honour you because you have honoured us all this time.  Stay tuned.
