"Whoever is happy will make others happy too." Anne Frank

It was a beautiful day and after much planning, we were ready to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Silver Thimble. Excitement was rampant because we had all worked very hard toward this day, and found it hard to believe it was truly here.

Decorations and flowers were abundant both inside and outside the Shop. Red and white balloons to match our Canadian Flag were flying outside the Shop.

Our gala began early in the day with the surprise arrival of out-of-town friends whom we had not seen for years, and we enjoyed their thoughtfulness in arriving before anyone else. Flowers and messages of love and goodwill from far away --by telephone, not e-mail-from both the U.K. and Australia. Our heart sang, and we were really on a high.

We had ordered a magnificent chocolate mousse cake and was it ever good!

Then followed the very best that could possibly have happened which was a marvelous thing. Caro had been very, very busy working with thoughtful caring and love, encouraging everyone to get busy and stitch, herself included. I believe it all began in May. “My Book" was presented to me in the morning with so many of you here to see it all happening. Each page is a creation of each dear person who works with me as well as some of our teachers, "The Silver Thimble Group”.It was Pat Overell who put her genius to work mounting each treasured piece onto fabric and ultimately, the pages became 'My Book". Jane Cartwright who is so very creative and talented, added beautiful drawings on each page. Caro, whose genius began it all, created the cover and oversaw the combined stitchery of the back and the lettering.

When you come into the Shop, please ask to see this indescribable treasure.

Just recently and to bring the Anniversary to another crest was the unexpected arrival of Thelma Meyer. She had grown up in The Silver Thimble, and her father had built it. She had presented herself to us the day the Shop opened. She was thrilled to see her old home the day it opened for business and was equally happy to see it on her return 25 years later. Now 93, she was full of wonderful stories about living at 64 Rebecca Street with her sister and parents. Someone had sent her a copy of the story of the 25th which appeared in The Beaver.

Something to Think About

Now it is nearly Christmas which has our heads in a whirl, and I am sure yours are as well. We would like to make some suggestions:

Don't forge~ Gift Certificates in any denomination for classes and supplies.

Guild members receive 10% discount.

Canadian designers are becoming very prolific and are they ever good.

Jeannette Douglas of Calgary produces wonderful charts featuring areas of Canada and they are beautifully documented and a joy to stitch with the specialty fibres and charms included. The latest to this series is Quebec, and then Toronto as well as Oakville, The Northern Lights is particularly exciting.

From the Stitching Studio on the West Coast comes the Sue Coleman Collection. They are wonderful too as they incorporate First Nations designs with the bird or animal it represents. Very innovative and exciting.

Choose a kit from Beth Russell, a renowned designer.

The excitement at the moment is the addition to the Australian A-Z series --Crewel Embroidery. It is certainly another winner. Interest in crewel seems to be on the increase. It is a very forgiving form of needlework.I recently saw in a shop window a jean jacket, the back of which was an outdoor scene in rough crewel. It was outstanding both in appearance and cost. Ideas anyone?

Magnifiers and lamps as well as other magnifying aids make many stitchers happy and more comfortable as will becoming the owner of a sturdy and well planned Hearthside frame. Solid oak and it has wheels at the front for ease of mobility. It will last many lifetimes.

Have you seen our Yazzii bags? They come in two sizes and three colours. Perfect for stowing all your stitchery accessories which we have as well.

Don't forget:

More Thoughts

Please don't use hoops when working crossstitch. They do mark your fabrics because your fabric becomes crushed, and it is almost impossible to return it to normal. Instead, just work it in your hand.

We have the opportunity of having benches and footstools made to order with wood of your choosing. They are truly lovely.

When bringing in pleating for smocking, please tear (do not cut) the straight pieces. Wash fabric, please, and do not cut out armholes. They can be just marked with pencil.

Did you know that the Bayeux Tapestry is really crewel work?

The most popular natural repellants to moth: are cedar, lavender and eucalyptus, rosemary, thyme, sage and mint. It is the larvae, not the moth that eats the wool.
