The purpose of the course is to teach the fundamentals of classical animation and to give a strong foundation of the skills needed to produce animation. Our course will help students improve their working methods to better prepare for college if they wish to continue their education in animation, or to give them enough information to produce animation on their own. Lessons can be adapted to the skill level of each student.
The student is assumed to have some drawing ability, and special guidance will be given to improve their skills. Previous experience in animation is not required. A portfolio review will be offered at enrollment to evaluate the student's potential and improvement of technical skills.
The course will teach how to move objects and characters in space to make them look alive, by using the elements of timing, weight, push and pull, squash and stretch, the importance of story, and acting.
The principles learned in this course can be applied to classical and computer generated animation. It has only been since the classical animators and artists have been able to use the computer as a tool, that computer animation has become an art form rather than just a curiosity.
The materials used in the class will also teach how the other parts of animation fit together. How to make the characters or objects seem alive. How timing will change the appearance of the scene. How the storyboard plots the action of the whole cartoon. Also how the backgrounds and props work with the characters to complete the cartoon.
By the end of the course the students will be able to understand animation terms; read and produce timing sheets; and be able to design a character, make a model sheet, and move that character. The exercises procede from basic to more advanced, requiring the ability to analyze drawings and animation to improve students skills and understand the concepts needed to produce a quality product.
Upon request a student will receive an extensive portfolio review and suggestions as to how to improve their portfolio for college admission.
