BICYCLING
I love touring on my bicycle and I've been very fortunate to have taken 4 great trips to Europe specifically to cycle. The first was to Italy in 1994 where my father and I cycled on two old Roman roads, the Via Emilia (from Milano to Fanno - on the Adriatic coast) and the Via Flaminia (from Fanno to Roma). In 1996 my wife Elizabeth got hooked on the whole idea of cycle touring and 4 of us (including my brother and father) went to France and cycled from Dijon to Avignon, then on to Mulhouse and up the Rhine to Strasbourg. In 1997 & 1998 Elizabeth and I went back to France. Those trips are described below.

ABACUS
Recently I've become interested in learning how to use an Abacus. It's amazing how quickly and efficiently this ancient calculator can solve all kinds of mathematical problems. Both the Chinese and the Japanese have their own versions and although the techniques involved in working both kinds are very similar, each has a slightly different construction.
