The island of Terçeira is located in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 2,300 miles (3,700 km) east of New York and approximately 900 miles (1,450 km) west of Lisbon, Portugal. It has approximately 250 square miles (400 square km) of land surface and is part of the nine islands of the Açores, which belongs to Portugal.

Terçeira was designated as "Island of Jesus Christ" during the 1450's when the first Portuguese settlers began arriving and colonizing the areas known now as Porto Judeu and Praia da Vítoria.
