SPEAKERS CORNER

Let's "discuss" it!

I don't know about your hometown but in mine no matter how many things are being dealt with in a positive manner and progress is being made we still have the wacko politicians, social re-engineers and self appointed saviors trying to model society in their image and I have had enough and have ressurected Speaker's Corner as an outlet for my frustration. There is no timetable or schedule....it just happens. My hometown BTW is Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Food Critics

A couple of thoughts on Food Critics:

1) They are a group that can't do so they critique.

2) They should review eating establishments that would be frequented by the readers of the venues in which they are published.

Having said that I doubt whether many of the readers of The Sun frequent the establishments that are reviewed. I wonder why the food critic for The Sun is not reviewing Red Lobster, The Mandarin, Golden Griddle, Kelseys, The Keg, Harveys, etc. or the strip mall greasy spoon where you can get breakfast for one half to one third of the cost of breakfast (nee: brunch) at the trendy ones reviewed and the quality and quantity doesn't come close to the greasy spoon.

I have never had too high a regard for critics in general but the thing that got me going was a comment in the review in the Sunday, April 1st Toronto Sun where the critic commented she was offered a 6:30 PM reservation and she commented that she would eat at that time only if she was having dinner with her grandfather. A definite case of age discrimination.

Is the food tastier at 8:00 PM than at 6:30 PM; are the portions larger, is the service better, does the ambience change and you could go on and on and on and while it is true many establishments do offer Early Bird specials, which seniors take advantage of, my reason for eating early is because I don't have to wait in lineups and I don't have to put up with the pompous, pretentious people that dine rather than eat.

Maybe if critics had to pay for their meals, rather than expense them in which case we all pay, they would go for value rather than worry about being trendy.

It Has Been A Strange Couple Of Weeks......

A US nuclear submarine sinks a Japanese fishing boat, a long term FBI agent is accussed of spying for the Soviets, M&M and Elton John will be on the Grammies doing a duet, the Supreme Court of Canada ignores the sovereignity of the state of Washington by refusing to extradite two accussed killers if they are subject to the state's death penalty and it goes on and on and on and I was thinking if there wasn't something positive to ponder.........

  • if you want to start the tears flowing and the flags waving all you have to do is utter the words disabled, physically challanged , etc. and I really think we are short changing these groups. I reached this conclusion while watching television, the other day, and there was a teenage girl, who appeared to have Downs Syndrome and she was speaking perfect French. How many of us can do that.......
  • maybe it time we fired the City of Toronto Mayor and all the councillors and hired Barnum and Bailey to manage the city. At least they are professional clowns instead of the wannabees that we elected.
  • when politicians, which includes the mayor, attend functions are they actually doing any work; ie: waiting on tables, parking cars, picking up dirty dishes , etc. or is it simply an opportunity to garner votes and get some free publicity. If that is the case why should we provide free transportation whether it is by limosine,, taxi chits, etc.
  • people really need to expand their vocabulary and learn the meaning of love and hate. For instance, I LOVE my family, friends and dog but I don't love chocolate cake. I might like it or even have a passion for it and in the same vein I am contemptuous of pompous individuals and despise pehophiles but I don't hate them;neither are worthy.

Maybe It's Time We....

started jailing politicians when their actions and/or inactions endanger the public.

The jokers on the City of Toronto council have started the hand wringing, crocodile tears, flaying the club, the sky is falling routine related to the budget for 2001. Double digit tax increases, reduction of services, elimination of services, layoffs, etc.etc. and the problem is a lack of funding from the provincial and federal governments and amalgamation. And there is probably some truth in that but I would like to send this message to the mayor and councillors; "Hey assholes, we just went through three years without any increase in taxes at the municipal level. If we had collected taxes during that three year period would we not have been in a little better fiscal shape today?"

Stupid....stupid.....stupid!

It's 2001 And Nothing Has Changed.....

* Mayor Mel is still blaming the Harris government for all his problems in an attempt to cover his ass for the inevitable tax increases that the homeowners of Toronto will be facing over the next three years. Hey Mel.....if you don't cut services in any substantial manner and you don't increase your revenue in any manner doesn't it make sense that eventually the taxpayer will have to cover your ass?

* The gay community is still making a mockery of the Trudeau concept that government has no place in the bedrooms of the nation by pushing for a a change of the definition of marrariage. Eventually the government will change the definition and recognize same sex marriage and personally I don't think it is a major issue but I will admit I will feel uncomfortable being introduced to Mrs. & Mrs. Jones. But it is just another example where a small minority can change tradition.

* The feds are still downloading immigration costs on the City of Toronto and in one particular area, shelter, the increase in housing refugee claimants is taking away funding which is needed for providing shelter to Canadian familities that are down on their luck. Accept the refugees but let the feds absorb all the costs.

* A teenage girl in England has acheived noteriety because she wants a breast implant because she thinks it will help her succeed. This girl is lacking in some basic values and common sense if she thinks that this is all there is to success, regardless of the airheads that seem to acheive their 15 minutes of glory in movies and tv based on little more, and her parents should have at least taught her if she needs to be driven to the plastic surgeon by them then her decision is premature. 01/19/01

What's Been Happening

  • A young boy, in a Toronto public school, saw some of his less fortunate classmates carrying their schoolbooks, etc. in plastic shopping bags and he thought this was not right so with the help of his "younger" brother and his parents canvassed a number of corporations and thanks to their generosity this young boy delivered 1000 knapsacks filled with school supplies to the Daily Food Bank in Toronto for distribution to needy kids. It makes you wonder what social in-activists like OCRAP have done for the needy lately.
  • There seems to be something wrong here. There is one program underway to supply addicts with crack/cocaine pipes and another program is being proposed to offer an amnesty and $50 to people who turn in guns. Now the last time I heard crack/cocaine are regulated substances and their sale and use is illegal and it seems like almost most shootings in Toronto can be traced to drug deals. So we seem to be offering the drug dealer's customers new pipes and at the same time are asking them to turn in their guns. Doesn't there seem to be a conflict between these two programs? Or is this something too complex for our elected officials to comprehend? Maybe we should have them pass a bylaw that prohibits councilors from chewing gun while in council chambers.
  • The moose, in Toronto, are being vandalized and on a call in show on City TV I was surprised to hear quite a few people blaming the concept and the moose. Doesn't that say something about a segment of our population who still believe that the government has an obligation to provide a cradle to grave environment for them.
  • City of Toronto council voted to send our garbage to Kirkland Lake over the protests of the northern community who have fears of major problems if the technology fails. What arrogance!
  • City of Toronto council approved a pay increase for the incoming councillors which exceeded that civic employees received during the last round of negotiations. Some councilors justified the increase saying they are on call 24 hours a day to deal with constituent problems and with fires, crime, etc. Hey guys were you not smart enough to find out what the job entailed before you ran for office.
  • The Beaches Jazz Festival was a success once again, even with the cancellation of the firefighters striptease parody, Caribiana of course was a success as usual and hopefully they will see a little less red ink this year and there is no reason to believe the upcoming Taste of the Danforth will also be successful. Two events organized and run by the community and not by Mayor Mel and his band of Barnum & Bailey rejects. These are the kind of community events that taxpayers should be more than happy to support.
  • Police helicopters are flying but not without complaints from segments of the community about the noise. But it is these same members of the community who scream bloody murder when a serial rapist targets their community and the police are attacked for not catching the perputrator.

A Few Thoughts From The Old Fart!

  • Finally the Gonsalves kid has gone home with HIS family. The highest court in the U.S.A. has shot down any further appeals by the Miami relatives and hopefully this is the beginning of negotiations with Cuba to settle the differences that have prevented the citizens of Cuba from enjoying the benefits of this hemisphere.
  • 800 protesters marched on Queen's Park, in Toronto, Ontario, to protest the plight of the homeless. The group was made up of a coalition of various in-activist groups and the protest turned into a riot when one the groups, Ontario Coalition Against Povery, OCRAP, came to legislature with every intention to cause a confrontation with police. OCRAP supporters came armed with rocks, cans filled with stones, smoke and paint bombs and other missles that they used against the police and police horses. Their plan backfired and almost everyone, except members of the communist party and the anarchists, condemned OCRAP's actions. This included other protest groups, politicians from all parties, the labour movement, particularly the CAW, and the average citizen.
  • Municipal elections in Toronto, Ontario, will be held in November and the incumbent mayor, Mel Lastman, has annouced he will be running for another term. This writer cannot understand his popularity as he doesn't seemed to have accomplished anything worthwhile over the past three years. His major accomplishments seem to be restricted to being available when ever the media is available and for calling out the army to help with a snowfall we had a couple of years ago. He did meet his committment not to raise taxes but for a city dealing with amalgamation this seemed to me to be fiscal irresponsibility.
  • Following the lead of Chicago and New York the City of Toronto has implemented The Moose In The City. The project was driven by the public sector. 300 moose are now grazing in various parts of the city and the artists are to be commended for their creativity. I understand that various charities will benefit from this project. Of course, like any large urban centre, when the moose were first moved into place there was some vandalism and a Moose Hotline was setup to report acts of vandalism. Let's get real. Another interesting sidebar is that all the moose seem to be males, as evidenced by their racks, and one of our female city councilors took umbrage with this gender bias and another councilor, a male, is upset because he wasn't involved in the name given to the project. I think this proves that stupidity is not gender neutral.

Ranting and Raves

Toronto City Council has decided that allowing Raves to be held on city owned property promotes drug use....particularly the drug of choice, Ecsatsy is inappropriate and that Raves should be banned. This was based on comments by the Chief of Police and the hysteria of the majority of council who seemed to have forgotten their own misspent youth.

At the last Rave, held in the Better Living Centre at Exhibition Park, there were 8000 kids attending and police made 18 arrests for drug offences. But the Chief says that 80% of those attending were using drugs meaning that each of the dealers made approximately 400 sales each or the police failed to nail most of the dealers.

Personally I think that 80/20 rule applys.....80% of the kids were there to have a good time and possibly 20% might have been under the influence of drugs. That is not much different than what happens on a regular basis; 80% of the kids are good kids and 20% are little assholes that create all the problems.

But the council has decided that it is better to drive the Raves underground where promoters have less responsibility to provide adequate security, adequate facilities and emergency support services.

Drug dealers will operate without any concern about being caught.

There has not been a generation of teenagers who have not attended Raves, they had different names but they were there, and there has always been illegal substences used. Originally it was liquor, and then as the generation now making the decisions saw nothing wrong with recreational drug use, we saw marijuana, then acid and lsd, then we moved on to crack and cocaine and now it is ecstacy.

Not much has changed.....we have decision makers that turned a blind eye to the use of illegal substances when they were teenagers and now they rant and rave and make myopic decisions.

What hypocrisy!

Some Random Thoughts.........

  • Send the Gonzales kid home with his father and please; someone in Miami explain to the Cubans that they lost their war with Castro decades ago and they might better spend some time thinking about what they will do when the United States recognizes Cuba.
  • Someone explain to Alan Rock that he needs to spend some more money on advertising the "gun control" legislation he brought in....it is obvious that a lot of people, especially in Toronto, haven't heard about his registration program.
  • New uniforms for the Toronto Police Department is an administrative and internal matter and if the rank and file want to change their uniforms let them do so as long as they don't start wearing mirrored sunglasses and hire guys named Bubba.
  • The Ontario Human Rights Tribunal should make a ruling that during Jewish holidays bagel shops are an essential service and closing during these holidays violates the rights of Gentiles to have a hardy, chewy breakfast. This of course excludes all Yuppie bagels and only applies to traditional real bagels......remember the pedlar who used to sell real bagels door to door.
  • Let's start prosecuting parents that use the Internet as a baby sitter and then holler because some of the material might not be appropriate for children and advocate censorship.

 Gasoline Pricing Hysteria

With gasoline at the pumps in Ontario reaching over 70¢/litre the outrage of the driving populace has reached a crescendo with independant truckers impeding the flow of traffic and barricading refinery entrances, (IMHO these actions has more to do with labour relations than gas/diesel costs), groups calling for boycotts of selected stations on a rotating basis, provincial politicians calling for action by the federal government, the lliberals in Ottawa buring their heads in the sand (but not the Tar Sands) and the emphasis has been mainly on reducing taxes on gasoline which made up almost 50% of the pump price.

I'm not happy with what I have to pay at the pump but I have real problem focusing on who to blame mainly because I don't have enough information:

  • what is the price of crude oil at the refinery gate?
  • in the processing of crude oil what marketable products are recovered?
  • what is the profit margin on each of these marketable products?
  • what part of the refining costs are directly attributed to recovering gasoline?
  • what part of the refining costs are directly attributed to recovering diesel fuel?
  • is the profit margin from a barrel of crude oil calculated individually or as a total?
  • of the taxes collected by the federal and provincial government how much is actually allocated to the transportation infrastructure?
  • do truckers claim the cost of fuel as an expense on their income tax and if so what is their actual cost of fuel?
  • and there are probably a lot of other factors that need to be considered.

There is no question trying to find a solution is complex but I don't think reducing taxes or profit margin would make any major impact on the price at the pump and we must accept the fact that global market forces has much to do with the price we pay at the pump.

In my opinion there has to be an overhaul of the "system."

1) The profit margin on gasoline and diesel fuel has to be set by a National Energy Board. This is being done with natural gas and electrical power so why not gasoline and diesel. The profit margin would be based on the cost of crude+transportation to the refinery+cost of refining+cost of transporation to the pump. Items not directly related to the manufacture and distribution of the product would have to come out of oil company profits and not passed on to the consumer.

2) Taxes at the pumps would be reduced for commercial users and commercial users would be those people who are allowed to charge the cost of fuel as an expense on their income tax returns. This would increase the disposable income of commercial users and there would be a net effect on government revenues.

3) Taxes collected at the pump, excluding GST, would be allocated directly to maintainance of the infrastructure based on the contribution of a specific area meaning if Toronto wanted to improve public transit part of this would be underwrittent by the drivers of Toronto, the people in northern Ontario could improve roads to get lumber to market, etc. Part of the infrastructure cost would be the cost of policing, maintenance, health care costs generated by road accidents, capital expenditures, etc.

If there is a shortfall between capital costs and revenue the shortfall would be raised through bond issues rather than tapping general revenue which could reduce payments for social assistance, health care, etc.

I appreciate that I might be a little niave in thinking that governments would be willing to tackle industry giants and I normally don't believe in government interference in the marketplace but you never know; it is possible that it might come to them that the general good takes precedence over political contributions.

True Blue

The Toronto Police Association has stepped up their campaign to collect and disseminate information about politician's who "oppose," "criticize," etc; the police either as a force or on an individual basis. This in itself is old news and what has got the media in a frenzy is the latest tactic in the Association's campaign; ie: the use of telemarketers and identifying/recognizing individuals who contribute financially by issuing stickers which they place on the windshield of their cars or the front widow of their home.

I personally see nothing wrong with the concept of informing the Association's membership about the voting record of politicians on "police" matters and the Association has every right to do so but this latest manoveur and it's implementation has been a complete disaster and the head of the Association and it's Board of Directors will see how much of a disaster at the next election for Association personnel.

Over the past couple of days it has been a feeding frenzy for the media with them reporting the utterances of policians, in-activist groups, private citizens, etc. and if I thought the Association had the intelligence I would credit them with creating the frenzy in order to cover up a potential hidden agenda.

Here are a few points to consider:

The voting records of politicians are public and a middle income researcher could access, tabulate and disseminate this information to the members of the association which would make the whole campaign to raise funds redundant.

Why would the association hire private investigators to look into the affairs of politicians/private citizens unless it's only purpose is to "smear" the individual? The effect of this is illustrated by a comment from a member of the Police Services Board who says that due to the Association's campaign he has had his office swept for listening devices. The member in question is a lawyer and I can't believe he is implying the Association would be stupid enough to break the laws on wire tapping but that is the impression you get from his comments.

Members of the association have the same rights as you and I to show our displeasure with a politician at the ballot box and if a politician/public figure has contrevened the law Association members and we can take legal action.

Of it's 7000 members how many actually live in the GTA and would be able to cast votes for City of Toronto council, who control the police budget and appoint councillors to the Police Services Board?

The Association collects approximately $3.5 million a year in dues and it would seem that there should be sufficient monies internally without having to go begging to the public.

Mayor Mel has called the practice of flogging window stickers for money is nothing but a "protection" racket and while I am no supporter of the mayor and his ranting he makes a valid point and I wonder how many people who have been solicited have wondered what the consequences will be of not contributing.

There is enough blame to go around and while I am an ardent supporter of the police I think their Association is not acting in there best interests. The image of the police has suffered over the years and the attitude of the executive of the Association has, IMHO, widened the gulf between the public, especially the non-white population, and the police officer on the beat.

Police officers have to deal with "attitude" on a continual basis and if the attitude of the public doesn't have some measure of trust it makes confrontations that much more dangerous.

Does the individual officer really deserve the added stress? I don't think so!

The police are there to "Serve & Protect" and the very essence of "Serve" means the interest of the public is paramount. Over the past 2-3 decades forces, politicians at all levels, in-activist groups, the judiciary, etc., have been hard at work to make the police officer's job harder and more frustrating and we have ended up with a group of social workers with guns and highly intelligent and dedicated officers are leaving the force in disgust.

Let's take the politics, both on the mangement and Association side, out of policing. Both the police officer and citizens are entitled to mutual respect.

Will Anything Really Change?

It is the start of a New Year and. depending on how much of a life you have. a new millennium but will anything really change? I don't think so........

* Mayor Mel will continue with his photo opportunities and outrageous proposals and threats....he says he will announce whether he will run for mayor in April 2000. Before he decides he might want to talk to Councillor Rob Davis who is jockeying for position.

* Howard Moscoe will continue to be Howard Moscoe and the ban that keeps him out of china shops will remain in effect.

* Shepherd Avenue might reopen at Yonge Street when the subway to nowhere is completed.

* Jack Layton will continue to walk past the homeless in the city hall square and continue to tell us "we" are not doing enough to solve the problem.

* John Clarke, CAP, will mount an attack on the new Loblaws Supercentre, at St. Clair and Bathurst, and hold the produce clerk hostage demanding safe passage to Nirvana BUT this will only happen on a nice day between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

* John Sewell will have his sandals resoled and continue his journey to martyrdom.

* Frances Nunziata will put forward a motion, that will receive unanimous consent from City Council, to brand all prostitutes with an H for harlot and to allow all local citizen groups to castrate "johns" on their streets.

* Dalton McGoonty and Howard Humpton will continue to make fools of themselves.

* Social in-activists will continue their protests, with support of the dinosaurs in the labour movement, and when the year ends the only ones who will have benefited will be the sign makers and the bus companies.

* Newsgroup junkies will continue to blame the current Harris government for the ills of the world and will rehash the same futile arguments from the previous four years.

Let's support.....

I would like to start a campaign to ensure that Mel Lastman's contributions to the City of Toronto do not go unrewarded in the event he decides to not run in the next election or, the unthinkable, he is defeated.

I propose and plead for your support to have the provincial government appoint him as the official Court Jester for the City of Toronto complete with all the regalia.

Anyone looking at his record, over the period he has been mayor, cannot deny he deserves the position of Court Jester. Let's give him credit for..

  • his personal plea to a group that could have an earth shattering impact on our city....The Spice Girls.
  • the pride he exudes dressed in leather and riding on a float in the Gay Pride parade.
  • all his photo ops which seem to keep him away from council for most of the sessions.
  • his sucking up to Harris and Cretian one day in a photo op and berating them publicly the next day.
  • his campaign to make the City of Toronto a province.

And we could go on and on and on because we know that he will out do himself with every utterance and an example would be a media clip on Tuesday, November 25th showing Mayor Mel ranting, about something, while wearing a hard hat and santa claus cap.

How can you take him seriously?

VICIOUS ATTACK.........

Last weekend a teenager was viciously beaten by a gang of "youths" and died from that beating. The death of the teenager is a tradegy in itself but it is just the tip of the iceberg.

From what little information the police have it appears that a gang of approximately 10 "youths" were present with two to three of them actually involved in the attack. It occurred in a local community park which in all likelihood was a hangout for this gang and therefore they are probably not strangers to the people that use this park.

Somewhere in the confines of the City With A Heart, the former North York, there are ten teenagers whose behaviour must have changed since last weekend. If you were involved in a murder wouldn't your behaviour change? My question is why has this change not been noticed by the parents and why have they not contacted the police and if the parents haven't noticed any change then maybe then should be charged as accessories.

Eventually the police will find the perpetrators and they will be put into what we call our justice system and I will guarantee you that the individuals who actually administered the beating will not face murder charges but some lesser charge that will put them out on the street in a few years and the remaining members of the gang will either not face any charges or if they are charged with anything will end up with probation.

Let's not forget that small l liberal bleeding hearts are waiting for the arrests so they blame society for the action of a group of thugs.

11/17/99

ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF JUSTICE

Christina Blizzard, a columinist for the Toronto Sun wrote a column in last weekend's Sun about the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Fund (OMERS) which has assets of $33 billion in assets and a surplus of $6 billion and while the theme of the column about "abuses" by the fund administrators and how outraged Sid Ryan, CUPE Ontario President and defeated NDP candidate in the last election and briefly touched on the plight of Gladys Layton a retired CUPE member and nursing home aide.

Gladys was in the plan since it's inception in 1967 and paid into the plan for 23 years and what does she get after 23 years of contributions.....a measly $295.99 per month.

Compare this with a case in the private sector.....the individual involved was in a private pension plan for 10 years and on retirement received a company pension of approximately $400 per month.

If there was ever a case for the government getting out of pension plan business this has to be it and once again, like in the pay equity issue, we see the failure of organized labour to serve their members.

11/17/99

City of Toronto

* The latest polls show that Mayor Mel is very popular with the citizenry of the City of Toronto and IMHO all this does is prove the old adage; "Most people don't know the difference between chicken salad and chicken shit." His popularity can't be supported by his accomplishments as there are none. All we seem to get are grandiose schemes with little chance of ever seeing them come to fruitition. I challange anyone to list his accomplishments.

* I hope the latest challange in Mayor Mel's life isn't too devastating and doesn't drive him to threaten bodily harm to the messenger......Councillor Kyle Ray has threatened that if Mayor Mel supports Juliano Fantino as the new police chief Mayor Mel can forget about riding on one of the floats in the Gay Pride Parade.

* There is a lot of discussion and indecision about the new flag/banner for the City of Toronto. I don't know what the problem is......the design is obvious. It should be a clown dancing on a ball with a circus background. Although with the latest abuses; pay raises for admin assistants, abuse of expense accounts, etc. maybe it would be more appropriate to use the Mad magazine mascot with the banner headline; "What? Me worry!"

11/9/99

Pay Equity?

The concept of equal pay for work of equal value has got to be the most flawed concept that our courts and government have iniatated.......the idea has merit but the application is too subjective and consequently the taxpayers of Canada are taking it in the butt twice and are facing the payout of 5 billion dollars. Thanks to the Feds screwing around our imposed obligations are increasing each day.

There have been some reports that 3 billion dollars had been set aside to cover the governments ass in the event the Supreme Court upheld the Human Rights Tribunals decision but if the government had met their obligation 8 1/2 years ago we wouldn't be facing such a large payout and I can imagine the boondogle that is going to occur to ensure that everyone that is entitled gets their increase.

I wonder if during the assessment process anyone thought that if there was true inequity between "the parking lot attendant and the invoice clerk" that the wages of the parking lot attendant would be frozen.

Motormouth Appoints Himself to Toronto Police Commission

Mayor Mel Lastman has appointed himself to the Police Commission to replace Judy Sgro and this might not be a bad idea considering his past experiences with the law except based on his media feeding frenzy I can see the Keystone Cops being brought back for the new millennium.

I visualize him speeding up to a crime scene in the Melmobile, looks very much like a refrigerator on wheels, and when police question witnesses, and ask if they know who the perpetrator might be, the witnesses will reply, Nooooooooooo Body!

I wouldn't be surprised to see him wearing his version of a police uniform, ala George Patton, complete with the pearl handled revolvers and epaulets and high boots (lifts included) and he will look splendid when he marches in his favorite parade, attending the next Spice Girls concert (if that ever happens), taking on the squeegee kids, stopping police chases that weren't chases, etc.

He talks about efficiency and controlling spending while trying to maintain the insanity of no tax increase which is probably the biggest crime being perpetrated on the citizens of Toronto.

Supreme Court Proceedings To Be Broadcast On The Comedy Network.......

The Supreme Court of Canada has once again shown it's bias in favour of Feminazis when they ruled that the firing of a female B.C. Forest Service firefighter was discriminatory. The female in question was fired when she failed four times to pass one of the required physical tests that all members of the Forest Service are required to take.

All candidates for the firefighting positions, as part of their physical testing, are required to run 2.5 km in ll minutes. In 1994, when the testing was introduced, only 70% of the men and 30% of the females passed. None of the other 30% of the females who failed sued but it would seem they improved their training and this is seen by the fact the today 60% of females pass.

BTW none of the males who failed the testing were hired.

The court B.C. Forest Service did not show that the complainant was a safety hazard or that passing the test was a justifiable or reasonable requirement for the job. What they failed to consider was the fact that the testing became mandatory based on the recommendation of a coroner's jury investigating the death of a logger in 1991 while fighting a fire.

The court decision will be played to the hilt, by the Rambofems (thanks to Linda Slobodian for a new descriptive) and it will get harder and harder for employers to hire the most qualified people for a position that directly involves Public Safety.

BTW there is some question whether the complainant wants her old job back.

Social In-Activists

social \so=shal\ adj 1 :marked by pleasant companionship with one's friends.

Based on this definition I think we should be referring to them as Anti-social In-Activists.....they certainly aren't pleasant and I certainly don't want their companionship and their friends are few and far between and are exemplified by John Clark, Coalition Against Poverty, and his leftist cohorts from the labour movement and other in-activitists who feel they were short changed because they weren't around to "enjoy" the 60s; ie: "free" love, drugs, cowardice, abrogation of individual responsibility, etc. and tryin to live their fantasies in a different time frame.

Clark's free park fiasco at Allan Gardens has got him a little publicity but little else. They certainly didn't get much support from the "homeless" and at no time were there more than 150 hanger-ons and I would bet most of them were from the groups referred to above. Clark's posturing about not leaving the park under any circumstances would be amusing except for the fact that it will be the Toronto Police who will have to deal with the problem and they are in a no win situation.

IMHO Clark should be charged with inciting to riot......I am sure his scrawny little body would be appreciated in the shower rooms at one of our local correctional institutions.

Even City TV 24 didn't feel the event worthy of much coverage as they kept running the same footage over and over again.

Here We Go Again......

The Toronto Fire Department staffing levels are down by 230 persons and Toronto City Council has approved the hiring of 50 new firefighters but not without strings. Councillor Rob Davis, who seems to be at the forefront, wants affirmative action put in place because the department does not meet the face of the community when it comes to females, aboriginals (indians), ethnic minorities, etc.

I pose two questions to Davis:

1) Davis is the only black councillor. Will he be pushing for a program that will "force" voters to change the face of City Council to match the community? Or has the message been lost on him that the reason he is the only black councillor is because not many blacks run for councillor and/or the ones that do, in the minds of the voters, are not qualified enough to get their vote.

2) As a parent, a spouse, a child, etc. do I not have the right to expect that when my son/daughter, husband/wife, father, etc. leaves for work that I have every expectation they will return safely and in good health because their workmates are equally qualified, physically and mentally, and are able to support them in times of danger. It appears Davis willing to gamble with their lives in the name of political correctness and to further his own polical career?

A Few Thoughts On Events Over The Past Few Weeks.....

  • A 30 year old female, who felt she was being verbally harassed by a a group of male teenagers, walked over to one of them and kicked him in the balls. When this 18 year old "man" told his mother what happened she informed police and the female was charged. This tells us a lot about the character of some teenagers and tells us a lot more about the lack of parental accountability,
  • Toronto City Council can find a few hundred thousand $$$$ to install a suicide net under the Bloor Viaduct (there are other bridges in Toronto) but won't support issuing tax receipts for corporate donations that were collected to put a Police helicopter in the air for a trial period.
  • As usual the Gay Pride parade drew a very large crowd (The organizers are to be commended) but some people are taking the size of the crowds as a sign of support for the gay community. If you subscribe to that rationale then you would also have to say that the people who attend the annual Santa Claus parade believe in Santa Claus. Both parades are attended for their entertainment value and to read anything more into the attendance figures is really stretching it.
  • Toronto City Council has passed anti-smoking bylaws that will be phased in over the next five years and is being touted as a compromize between anti-smokers, smokers, bar, bingo, restaurant owners, etc. While there was only one dissenting vote I think the real fallout of this compromize will not be seen until 2004 when bars come under the bylaw.

The Supreme Court of Canada has changed the definition of spouse as it has been interpreted in the Family Law Act in Ontario. For all intents and purposes this gives same sex couples the same standing under law as heterosexual couples.

The morality and necessity for this change is the subject for a whole different discussion although you wonder if Trudeau might have had a hidden agenda when he legalized homosexuality with his famous; "Government has no right in the bedrooms of the country"

The issue at hand is that it is the duty and responsibility of our elected officials to make and change laws not the Supreme Court of Canada and every party and the majority of politicians must shoulder the blame for the social engineering that is taking place under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

As a citizen I don't have the where for all to challange the courts but I can exert some influence on my MP, MPP and Municipal politicians but the political parties must be able to recognize when a free vote is warranted on issues that are important to the electorate.

We are in the midst of a provincial election in Ontario and I recommend that you support Mike Harris and his Conservative Party.

Looking back over the past 4 years even the most ardent supporters might find it hard to defend some of the actions of the conservatives but there is one aspect of the conservative tenure that cannot be denied. THEY HAVE MADE CHANGES and most of these changes were outlined in their election platform.

If you want to measure the effectiveness of Mike Harris just look as his opposition:

Teachers....objecting to changes to an eductional system that would put them back into the classroom; objecting to provincial wide bargaining which takes away their clout when dealing with weak and ineffective school boards and an overall levelling of the playing field between employee and employer.

Unions...objecting to elimination of repressive labour legislation which dissuades commercial growth in the province and a continuing loss of power.

Ratepayers....objecting to having to pay their fair share of property taxes.

Poverty activists.....who see changes of the social assistance system as a threat to their very existence through the cuts in funding which would be better spent on helping the needy. and it goes on and on and on but thankfully we can take solace in the fact that the protesters don't represent the voters of the province but rather the malcontents who feed off the misery of other people. Think of how many needy people could have been helped if during fiascos like the Days of Protest, the participants had remained on the job but asked, as a protest, that their wages for that day be donated to charity.

McGuinty denounces the health care policies of Mike Harris but doesn't talk about the number of hospital beds closed during the time they were in power, he stays away from his flip flop on teacher's right to strike and the latest one that I hear is his position on recognition of homosexuality as more than a life style choice.

Hampton is out on the heating grates at Queen's Park denoucing Mike Harris' position on homelessness and the death of a homeless person at the location but skirts around the deaths that occurred during the ndp stint in power or what they did to solve the homelessness situation. They had 4 years in power; kept none of their election promises; did not put roofs over anyones head, did not eliminate the need for food banks, did not find havens for physiactric patients and they blamed it all on a world wide recession which it appears started the day the NDP were elected.

The liberals and ndp want to take us backwards, back to the status quo, increased taxes, increased debt, increased union power, etc. They have no interest in building on the good things that Harris' has accomplished .....they will kiss ass and you and I will pay for it.

It is not enough to be concerned and take action to help people who you feel are "oppressed" whether it be the victims of spousal abuse, child poverty or of a military action.

Canada has made a decision to get involved in Kosovo, as a member of NATO, and whether it is the right thing to do or not we have to take responsibility for the results of our actions. In this case the result has been a multitude of refugees and the countries surrounding Kosovo are ill prepared to look after these refugees.

Canadians, as individuals, must accept some responsibility and try to help alleviate the suffering of these refugees whether it is through humanitarian organizations like the Red Cross or showing support for the government's decision to accept 5000 refugees.

Lobby your MP, and in the case of Ontario, your MPP and municipal politicians to support this iniative. In the case of your MP to ensure that the federal government provide sufficient financial support and that the appropriate provincial and municipal politicians provide the infra-structure support to support the newcomers to Canada.

As individuals we will have to fend off the criticisms of Canadian Serbs, the advocates for the homeless, white supremacy groups, etc. and show these newcomers that we don't gain freedom just by military might.

The hot topic of the day is the NATO action in Kosova and the protests mounted by the Serbian communities around the world. Lord knows they have every democratic right to protest and we have every right to take exception with their actions and comments.

IMHO most of the protests are no more than American bashing and whether the NATO action is justified is a whole other discussion and in this article I would like address comments made by individuals and spokespersons for the Canadians of Serbian descent.

The general consensus from these groups and individuals, that even though they are Canadian citizens, they are prepared to put on a uniform and join the Serbian forces in Kosova and this is based on their disappointment with Canada's actions are part of our commitment to NATO.

This fervor to join the cause comes with a proviso......when they are needed but it is my position that if they are that unhappy with Canada they should not wait......they should pack their bags and leave immediately.

I see no reason for them to wait.....the actions that Canadian forces have performed over the past few days will have occurred, if any deaths or injuries can be directly attributed to Canadian forces they cannot be undone or people brought back to life, etc.

The hyphen (-) by itself might seem insignificant but place it in terms like French-Canadian, Serbian-Canadian, etc. it has as much destructive power as a pound of C4 plastique.

Love us or leave us!
